Do you get any compliments on your car?

If there's anything that makes me happy and feel proud of all the work that's been done to my vert, it's when someone honks and gives me a thumbs up, says "kickass BMW" or comes up to me at a petrol station and starts up a conversation about the car or about cars in general.

It's nice to know that my humble little E30 gets noticed by other car guys, but I was curious if you guys ever get compliments or strangers coming up to you asking about your car and how you respond?

Anyway, DUH! Of course I do! It's a classic BMW! I get weird compliments on my car all the time. Last weekend I got a compliment from a guy with a Z4. The other week a guy with a Z3 came up to me at Mcdonald's asking if that was my bmw out there. But mostly it's me flashing my lights or waving at other bmw drivers out there, letting them know that contrary to popular belief, it's not a dying breed, and we are still running strong, headlights and all.

When I'd had the car only a few weeks, I got a compliment from an older lady about how nice my car was... as I was swearing out the PO's head unit for being a shitty panasonic. And one time I got a compliment from a guy in downtown Hartford... take that as you will.

The point is, ahem -cartman- I do what I want!

When someone approachs me I am polite and thankful but usually am looking for a way out of the situation as quickly and politely as possible. I never know what to say and I find the whole thing awkward. Thumbs up are much more preferred and luckily I get those more than the other.

This is probably my least favorite thing about owning an old/classic car. I hate getting lots of attention, and honestly, I don't really like talking cars to begin with. Most people you encounter either don't know anything about cars to begin with, but want to talk about cars... fuck that. Some dude, UPS guy or something, came by my house and saw me working on a car, and then asked me if I know why his CEL is on... this is the shit I can't stand.

Good thing all my interesting cars are broken/immobile. No one wants to talk about my old and tired Jetta hahaha.

I generally play it down and say some generic shit about how it's just an old crappy BMW. You never know if you're being approached because they want to steal it. I had some scum bag meth heads attempt a GTA style car jacking on me the other night. I've still got my car.

I dunno, I kinda see that as an opportunity to educate. That's just me though. I love talking about cars and video games. Sometimes you'll learn from someone else or they'll learn from you.

Since my car (2002) is parked out front of the shop I keep getting E30 guys asking if it's for sale. Dang hooligans looking for some style.

But anyways I do get one once and a while on mine, even though it does need painted. My Corvair I get them all the time whenever I take it out.

I had a guy driving a MTA shuttle ask if I ever race mine the other day at a stoplight. I had to say yes although I haven't yet. Lately though I've just had ratty jettas and golfs giving me thumbs up while driving.

As mentioned previously, I try not to talk about what's done under the bonnet or anything and just say it's a fun old piece of shit to drive around that isn't a daily driver in fear that someone might want to take a chance at stealing it. This wasn't the case like 4 years ago though where this paranoia didn't exist much in the community.

But yeah, random walk ups, clients at work asking if it's mine, older people telling me their stories on when they had one, and so on. It's cool.
I'm usually much shorter with teens and baggypants-McGee's though when they try sparking conversation about.

There's this one chick-fil-a drive thru that I go to often and when I roll up in my e30, more times than not one of the employees says something like, "cool car!" Will go there today to see if they say anything.

surprisingly its a daily occurrence for me. Every time I get gas, or I'm stuck in traffic....Someone always engages in a convo w/ me about my car. Its crazy the range in ages it attracts attention w/...from 17yrs old to like 80. I've had half a dozen notes left on my car w/ contact # asking if I'm willing to sell it.

I'm e30-less at the moment, but the first day I put my e36 m3 on the road I got 3 responses to it that best summarize what I normally encounter.

                              1) Dude in a slammed e34 with a roof rack giving me a thumbs up.
                              2) Dude in a clapped out Del-Sol bouncing it off the rev limiter while just staring at me.
                              3) Dude in a lifted diesel "rolling coal" on me.

And they say BMW drivers are the pricks.
