i'm late to this thread but it's not a straight line car. Get an s5x swap and be happy with it. If you want something that is fast in a straight line on a budget... get a late 80's 5.0 mustang.
E30's CAN be very fast.
My car (M30b35, chipped, lightweight flywheel, M5 trans, 3.46 diff) is right on par with 2 modded E36 M3's that I drove to Bimmerfest with. Will it break your neck when you slam on the gas? no. But it has plenty of power in every gear, and should run 13.8-14.1 in the 1/4 mile. I have $5000 into my car total, including purchase price. (but I am very thrifty, and have lots of parts at my disposal!)
Not doubting you but, we would all love to see a timeslip to prove this. I understand it's got a lot of torque but 13.8 to 14.1 might be a little too optimistic. On street tires or slicks ?
Have you looked into Volkswagens? A vr6 swapped mk2 GTI will run low 14's with a full interior and a good driver. Mine ran 14.4's all night, and I'm a shitty driver. With cams, some weight reduction, and a good driver 13's are easily within reach.
Here's how I see it man: my car is faster than a lot of others out there, and when I want to hit it, I can. When I need acceleration, I usually get it, and when I need to stop or take a turn at a fast speed I get what I want too. My e30 is extremely fun to drive. And I still hold on to that fact even though I've driven a lot nice cars than mine. Also, other people with cars such as e46 m3's and e39 m5's have driven my car to say "shit! your car is sooooo much fun I love it!"
