Is the 840 or 850 a decent car?

Honestly, I'd buy an alternative BMW or Mercedes before ever considering a Lexus.

Whats wrong with a Lexus? They are VERY reliable and if you're looking for a luxury cruiser, Lexus is a good choice. The only problem with them that I have is the driver is in NO way connected to the car. There is absolutely no steering feel at all.

If he just wants a reliable cruiser though, thats the way to go. At least over the 840/850. Almost all the parts are freaking expensive. And if anything leaks, its expensive. And it WILL leak. The Lexus on the other hand, wont leak hardly at all until it gets up to around 200k miles or so.

E24s are a nice blend of space, easily workable on, fun driving and classic.

There were 840i's with a 6 speed sold in the US. They're rare, but they do exist. I've actually seen two.

1) Buy 8 series.
2) Remove shitty motor and gearbox.
3) Replace with ls2/4l80e (auto) drivetrain.
4) Enjoy your quick, reliable, easy to fix 8 series.

Heavy, however with a manual they can be every responsive to the driver, and while you can really feel the weight, they hold the road very well, and are an all around awesome GT car.

For long drives on a freeway, I'd certainly grab an E24 over an E30.

Don't be misled in thinking that the E24 is much less expensive to maintain than an E31. Especially the M6 and M635...
