      borrowing from the yard

I never see anybody paying for small items. I would imagine that the cost of what must be widespread theft is included in the price of everything else.

      If you want lower prices:
      1. Don't shave
      2. Don't wear clean clothes
      3. A little grease on the face never hurts
      4. Don't look organized or have a list of part #'s
      5. When paying, pull out crumpled bills - no wallets or credit cards
      6. When they ask what kind of car, always say "1985" loud and clear and mumble "BMW"
      7. Grab a power mirror with faded paint and have them price this item first. When they tell you it is $27, exclaim how expensive it is and how you can't afford it. Put the mirror into the restock bin as they hate to see items going into the restock bin. The prices for everything else should drop.
Nuts/bolts/clips/fasteners/grommets always go in the pockets

As awesome of a write up as this is, I don't think it would fly. Being 17 and going to these part yards they put the price up a lot. I needed a plastic front bumper and a fellow R3V'er gave me a quote from a parts yard for $100. I went down and the same guy told me $150. Wouldn't give it to me for $100 because I "could have been some lying punk." Went back a few days later and got a younger guy to sell it to me for $100.

I guess it all depends on the seller too...

too bad most "updated" yards have everything priced out on the computer. its good and bad in a way. They want $5 a switch which is rediculous, but $170 for a motor which is why i now have a m50.
              NEED SOME VINYL STICKERS???

Yeah, the PYP's in Wilmington are all computerized - no haggling or sliding- scale pricing based on a customer's appearance...

I always bring a backpack full of snacks and water and they never check the front pockets. It helps to throw a couple of tampons in the bag so they feel uncomfortable and don't want to dig any deeper. Glovebox latches, fuses, switches, and nuts and bolts fit quite nicely in the backpack. ;)

LOL... when I was looking for a plastic bumper one yard sold me a front bumper for $45ish and another wanted almost double as they wanted to charge for the bumper and the bumper support part ... same yards, but different locations. go figure.

                        Kellie - haha, that's good.

-One yard wanted $600 for a m20 head with no vavle cover (ie, full of water). Sheesh

-But I've nabbed trunk tools, window switches, and an entire power-sunroof system. Yay.

I've been visiting the same yard, talking to the same counter guy for 10 years. I show him everything, including clips and little crap, and he charges me very little.

+1 on always asking for the part from the oldest car that will fit. If you need a fender for a '91 325i, you ask for a fender for an '84 318.
