wow, and I thought E30 guys were bad..

I just helped my fiance buy a "new" car a couple weeks ago - 2002 Sentra GXE with about 60k on it. So I've been doing research on it, as I'm in charge of maintaining the car, trying to learn the trouble areas etc. Found a couple Sentra forums, and thought it was pretty funny. Apparently:

-0-60 in 8.5 seconds is fast, and 7.2 seconds is VERY fast
-100,000 miles is a LOT (and if your car made it that far without having about $800 in sensors fail or needing a tow, you got lucky)
    -100whp is a big deal
-the 1.8l and 2.5l guys hate each other more than we make fun of bronzit 4dr auto eta 4x4s
-less than $20k for a car that does 0-60 in 7.2 seconds is a good deal (hmm, low mileage E36 M3s cost what, $15k?)

but at least the sentra gets twice the gas mileage of her old truck (and my car). :p

Why a Sentra? There are so many other nicer quality cars out there for like price? Mazda comes to mind.

this is one thing I'm not looking forward to, if I ever end up having a family

buying a car just for transportation's sake

I'd probably get a minivan though. They're easy to drive and I could install ten speakers and rock out constantly to pretend that my life wasn't over.
Not that I care, of course.

it was in her price range, in good shape, met her requirements (good gas mileage, FWD, manual). The only similar Mazdas were at least $4000 more. I would have rather gotten her a BMW (would have been cheaper too) but she's afraid of RWD. at least she drives a stick :p

also, this is in canada - prices are different there. it was either this or a Neon - no way in hell I was going to let her buy that.

No Neon's that is a definate NO.

MiniVan not bad for family transport, The 240 HP Honda Odessey is a good ride. Yeah Canada's pricing on used vehicles is odd.

Well a good 328i four door with traction control would have been a not bad vehicle.

yeah, an E36 would have been about $3k less and more reliable than the nissan.. but whatever, I don't have to drive it :p

it's for a girl to drive back and forth to work. I'm pretty sure she doesn't care about performance. :p

The other thing to consider is that repairs for the average person are significantly more expensive on a BMW than say a Honda/Toyota/Nissaan. There is something to be said for that.

Pretty much I think reliability and fun are inversely related
I don't think your mom appreciates the value of those modifications

cam sensors, mafs, o2 sensors and ECUs die on BMWs at 50,000 miles? really?

I know stuff goes wrong on BMWs, but not "I can't drive home because my car won't run" wrong, and certainly not < 100,000 miles.
