That's one of those things where if you had enough money, you go to BMW and say...

"I want one of these with a 6-spd manual transmission"

"SIr, we don't offer this engine with a 6-spd manual transmission..."

"I don't give a fuck if you offer it or not, BUILD IT!"

For the right price anything is possible.

Exactly. If I had the means, for me it would be an M3 CSL with a 6-speed manual.

nice motor, too bad they'll remove all physical connections between it and the chassis and put it in an overweight and ugly sedan.

Headers, full S.S. exhaust, and individual throttle bodies...sounds like wishful thinking for the US market.

funny, cause the E65 weighs less than the E39.. and nobody complained about the E39 M5.

looks are subjective, and personally I think the E65 is pretty damn good looking (I'll pass on the 6 and 7 though).

Is this the first time BMW has changed the number of cylinders in the same Sx/Mx classification?

                the S62 (E39 M5) had 8, S65 having 10. Odd.

EDIT: 8250RPM Redline. JESUS CHRIST. And I thought the S14 at 7600 was up there...

EDITx2: Waiting for Rob to say something about a real redline

Very impressive engine. Too bad I don't share the same feelings for the car its going into (meaning the 5). I would like to see it find a home in the new 6 though.

The fact that only SMG II will be offered tells me the poser crowd of the US market is winning over us real enthusiasts. What a shame. A motor like that deserves a standard 6-speed. Perhaps one day someone in the aftermarket will come up with a means to make that possible.

I have, it works well for an auto but its still not the same. Its fast but it still cant read your mind like your arm can. Its also not as fun. Maybe with the *proper* programming it would be just as good but they wont allow you to have it without voiding your warranty.

I love the drivetrain but hate the car. It is lighter and stiffer but its got a lot of bull on it that I dont dig.
                          Im now E30less.

I've driven the SMGII enough to know its fucking lame.

And no, 8250 is not that impressive for a supposedly f1 based motor.

no one complains about the e39 cause its really fast in a straight line, like I'm sure the new m5 will be. So will a mustang cobra, but that doesnt make them fun

SMG is pretty cool....my friend's dad just got a new 645 coupe with a SMG. Personally i'd rather have a 6-speed manual though, but SMG is still sweet non the less.
