Trivia Question: Was the s14 the only motor used in only one chassie by bmw?

Or has BMW made other motors that were chassis specific? (in other words - the basic motor(m10, m20, m30, m50, m70, ect)... seen only in one body type style (e12, e21, e30, e31, e36, e46, ect...)

I actually don't know the answer!

    M10: 2002, e21, ...
    M20: e28 and e30's, ...
    M30: e12, e24, e28, ...
    M50/S50: e36, e34, ...

So that rules out most of your run of the mill motors.

What about the S62 E39 only? S54 E46 only? Newer ones seem more frequent...

        And the z4 m coupe

        Obviously there's the new ones but I supposed they don't count, e60 m5 and e92 m3, 760il

What about the 850CSI? I don't know what was in that. And that old turbo 7, whatever it was

EDIT: Apparently the s70b56 was in the 850csi, only car with that engine. Also interesting, the mclaren f1 used a variation of the m70 that is similar to an s50b30

No, there was a couple of different versions of the s70.

          here´s the info from wiki:

          S70B56

          5.6 L version
          Applications
          • 1992–1996 E31 8-Series
          • Developed specifically for the 1992 BMW 850CSi, a BMW Motorsport vehicle
          • Lowest production engine in BMW history—1,510 units
          • Engine was used in a few supercars of the late 1990s

          [edit] S70/1

          6000 cc (approx.) ver\ion.
          Applications
          • M8 prototype

          [edit] S70/2

6064 cc version developed for the McLaren F1. Complete redesign from M70 and has no common parts, is actually closer to an S50B30 engine from the E36 M3. Engine block is shorter and lighter. Variable intake valve timing BMW VANOS two position adjustable.
          Applications

          [edit] S70/3

6064 cc version, further refinement of the McLaren F1 engine meant for racing. Later destroked to 5990cc in 1997.
          Applications

E21's got M20's too...just not here in the US.

BMW fitted an S14 in an E36 racecar before but that wasn't a production model. It was either an S14 or S42, not sure which. So, yeah the S14 was E30 specific...E30 M3 and Italian 320iS.

the 745i engine was an m106 and m102 block, but basically a m30 block with some minor changes and oil squirters(in some years), and also a very trouble prone engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M106

And the e36 got the s42

there are quit a few of those specialty engines out there that gone there own code, and were just found in one chassis

                S62 was in the E39 M5 and the Z8.
M20 was in the E34 as well.
                S54 was in the E46 M3 and new Z4M.

That was the S42. Johnny Cecotto drove that car for a while.

Most likely, but not in any other sold production cars. I'd forgotten about the 320is until Barry mentioned it.

                              s54 was in m-coupe until 2002. Check out Atan888's on s14.net.
