How cold is a cold start in San Diego :)

I don't know how MS does its parameters for cold start, but if you post them up I could compare to mine (VEMS).

What is your coil dwell set to? A value too high will fry your drivers.

Im dealing with a cold start issue and I cant get a decent start up with out extensive cranking. hot starts are almost perfect but cold ones sucks. If I crank to long it overloads my coil drivers and they fry. I ordered the updated ones that have a failsafe so this wont happen anymore.

Ive been driving around in economy mode at 8 psi. haha. All this work and im not even using all my boost.

      wtf was i thinking.

LOL 8psi = economy mode. Awesome. I think I am running 8psi all the time except at certain rpm's in certain gears where my internal gate will allow boost to creep to ~10psi.

Is the cold start issue a tuning problem? Sounds like it could put extra strain on the charging system and starter as well if it is long enough to fry the drivers.

Did not know they made updated drivers with failsafes built in... kinda nice. What version of MS are you running?

EDIT: ^What he said. Can check my dwell and startup settings against yours if you'd like.

See this is the issue. IF you are running a COP kit, the dwell values on m5x ignition coils compared to the m42 coils are different so anyone running MS or other tuning software needs to take this into account. I believe I may need to adjust my dwell settings some more.

by cold start i mean 60 degrees out side temp car has been sitting overnight...

that would be great! also yes, the new updated drivers from diy are suppose to shutdown before they toast off.

There is a separate setting for cranking dwell, sounds like that one might be too high for long cranks I think by default it is around 6ms which would be fine for normal starts.

Is this an older MS setup it sounds like you had vb921s and those went NLA about 5 years ago, are they all plastic or a metal base?

              Thanks for the input guys.

here is what im dealing with. Im on MS V3.5.7 This is a much older version but its still very usable.
As you can tell, its clear which driver failed. When this happens it also shorts out the ignition coil so I will need to replace that as well.

Ill load up my cranking settings soon.

yep. I swapped out one vb921 when it fried. Now I just have to swap over the rest.

Ordered new from diyautotune @ $9 each.

Yeah I know, but the M5x coils aren't much different. Its still pretty easy to tell if the settings are out of whack. The M5x are easier as there is a lot more info on them!

6ms for bosch coils is a rediculious amount of dwell. Why would you possibly need that much...especially at start? You need maybe half that at peak torque!

how are your cold starts at this setting ?

cold starts are fine. it cranks for a while because we haven't got the triggering perfect, but once it catches, settles to an idle straight away. I'm also running E85 which makes cold starting MORE troublesome

Im tweaking my dwell settings tomorrow. It appears I also have a triggering issue. My crank sensor drops signal sometimes and then I end up cranking for a really long time.

Its a brand new OEM sensor too. wtf. I can see it on my studio drop signal.

my trigger signals are good, but just the relationship between them and tdc, have to do a few revolutions for it all the sync up nicely. Not sure what is causing my misfire though :(
