Dude, there are a LOT of people hoarding the cars so they can restore them "someday" while the car sits and rots. I can think of at least 5-6 like this in the LA area alone. A couple of members here came up on their M3's this way.

its a Euro dogleg close ratio gearbox ,all US E30M3 models came with the overdrive w/ standard shift pattern. gearbox value alone is prolly close to what he paid for entire car

They don't cost 7kpounds, I got mine for a little over 1k. Actually finding one is the challenge

I don't want to get into too much detail, but the previous owner was suffering from depression due to a tragic accident he was involved in (fortunately this didn't happen in the M3). He lost interest in everything after the accident.
