    Worst Road trip Ever

On Saturday, some friends and I made the annual road trip home from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area.
We took the Pacific coast hwy (Highway 1), as we do every year.
Much fun was had along the way, stopping in LA, Santa Barbara, Cayucos, San Simeon.

Around 5:45 pm as driving through the Los Padres National Forest outside of Big Sur, it happened.
I was going around a right-hand corner, when within a split second I see a bunch of rocks tumble out in my peripheral.
No time to do anything, the rocks hit the side and the undercarriage of my car.
Many sparks were seen in the rear-view, and lakes of oil were leaked.

Broken sub-frame, oil pan, skid plate, tranny mount, steering rack, engine mounts, and iS lip (lol).

No cell coverage, nothing. Was able to call AAA from a tiny lodge that I ran some miles to before it closed, but they never came.
Between 6 - 11 pm me and my two friends were stranded in the middle of the woods.

Hiked up to a hermitage perched above the highway, where I was turned away, but was able to see a tow truck randomly repairing another person's flat tire miles to the south.
Ran the couple miles, and was able to get towed 75 miles north to Monterey.

There, AAA finally towed us back to the Bay Area where our adventure ended at 4 am this morning.

We had left San Diego at 9 AM the morning before, so the whole adventure lasted roughly 19 hours.

Here are some photos from the trip.

Sucks what happened but it could have been a lot worse, like a massive land slide or you going for a cliff dive. Just look at the bright side and get her back on the road. Hit the reset button.

Got the subframe, oilpan & gasket are also in the mail.

How extensive/expensive do you guys think the z3 rack conversion is?

Any adapters/other parts needed? I've seen conflicting information on the DIY sites.

                          What specifically?

I'm about to do the Z3 rack swap since my engine will be out. From what I've read, I think all you should need is the rack spacers, and some high pressure hoses? Yours is an airbag car, so IIRC you can leave the steering coupler/joint alone, but you have to modify your firewall slightly. Pretty sure you can use E30 tie rods as long as you use both the E30 inner and outer tierods together, but double check that. AKG sells the spacers: http://www.akgmotorsport.com/catalog...0%2FM50%20Swap

Where are you going to get the rack? Every place I've seen requires a Z3 rack in exchange, and it's something stupid like $500 without a core.

I'm budgeting about $500 for the conversion - ~$350 or so for the rack, $150 or so for everything else.

I don't know which DIY you're looking at, but I'm going by this one: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=66247

Sweet you gathered the parts up! Are you going to remove the engine or hold it up in the air and swap the parts in?

I dropped the car off at my grandparents house this afternoon.

I am not going to have time to fix the car myself, since some parts needed are expected to arrive a day after I will have gone back to San Diego.

Our family's indy Volvo mechanic friend is gonna be handling the subframe & steering rack job.

It'll be towed to the shop at some point in January or February, once I've collected all parts.

If the oil pan & gasket arrive before I leave, I can do that myself in 30 mins.

It's frustrating when you have to give your car to someone else to work on because you don't have tools, or will not be present - and I'll be the latter.
