    What would you do?

Well, here's my situation...I kind of talking it out with myself and decided to get some outside opinions incase I'm missing any pieces of the puzzle. Trying to make a big M3 decision...

As you guys know, I recently got into an 88 M3, very mild 2.5 liters, 15k on the motor, 99k original miles. Awesome car now that I've started to sort it out and get it running right.

Well part of my 2.5 build that happened 10 years ago is a set of old school forged pistons, which expand more with heat than the pistons of today. This of course results in a slightly larger overbore.

So what's the problem? I intend to daily drive this car, and frankly the bottom end on this thing is much more suitable for a weekend car/track car. I idle the thing for a few minutes before I drive anywhere to to let the piston slap go entirely away(such is the world of forged pistons) which is only an inconvenience but not a deal breaker. Once warm, it drives beautifully...retarded power etc.

E30 M3's don't like cold starts in general, and of course with my setup, this is even more true. With how many times I have to cold start my car per day, I just feel like I'm gonna kill it way early.

So, I have a few options.

    1) I could quit being a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles, drive the hell out of it, and rebuild it someday sooner than the average motor.

2)The other route is to put it in the hands of someone who will use it in such a way that is more ideal for the setup where it will last them a lot lot longer. Given the nature of the car, the motor, and the mileage, I have a lot of trading/selling power and could get into a more daily driver friendly M3. Plus, I could also get schwarz or silver ;-)

With option 2, I would of course be sacrificing some power since I'd probably end up with a 2.3...but considering that its only the 2.5 bottom end, lightweight flywheel, and chip I think I could get a 2.3 close if not equal with a little bit of love.

Any suggestions? Am I being paranoid or is there some logic here? My car buddies have given me mixed opinions going both ways...

but im voting A. drive the car, enjoy it and when time comes for a rebuild, well then do what you want the way you think is best suited for you. it took me a long time to find an M3 and i sure dont wanna go through that again. Enjoy it.

just drive it. you will always have to do something to it, so enjoy the magic of the M3 right now, and fix it later.

drive it and have fun. If the rebuild was done properly, you should have lots of fun miles ahead of you. Just be sure to keep short driving trips to a minimum.

FYI, forged pistons come in various mixtures of silicone, aluminum, and other metals. The mixture of silicone to aluminum greatly determines the ductility of the alloy as well as the thermal expansion of the alloy. Some pistons such as JE use a SI-AL mix that creates a more ductile piston (can handle more abuse) but also expands a bit, creating piston slap. Other pistons, such as Wiseco, expand much less so that machining tolerances can be much more exact, reducing piston slap, but also making a more brittle piston.

I say just drive it, and when you rebuild go with high sillicone forged pistons - no more piston slap. :)

or you could simplify and do a M10 swap

Yeah, I have older school pistons that like to expand more...so when I say piston slap, I'm not joking...

I feel like I may have gotten the track overbore, because my piston slap is louder than some others i've heard, but it still gets completely quiet once warm. How do you know how much is too much for a street motor?

Why don't you just buy another cheap E30 to use as a daily driver? There's plenty of them around for $2000-$3000 that are in decent shape. If you want to spend a little more, there's an '89 325i with 50k original miles floating around the forum for $6500.

That's what I'd do if I were you.

Drive it! I never believe in "saving" a car for the next guy. This assumes you don't have room for another car - otherwise, get a cheap 325 and save the M3 for long trips.
