Well, here's my situation...I kind of talking it out with myself and decided to get some outside opinions incase I'm missing any pieces of the puzzle. Trying to make a big M3 decision...
As you guys know, I recently got into an 88 M3, very mild 2.5 liters, 15k on the motor, 99k original miles. Awesome car now that I've started to sort it out and get it running right.
Well part of my 2.5 build that happened 10 years ago is a set of old school forged pistons, which expand more with heat than the pistons of today. This of course results in a slightly larger overbore.
So what's the problem? I intend to daily drive this car, and frankly the bottom end on this thing is much more suitable for a weekend car/track car. I idle the thing for a few minutes before I drive anywhere to to let the piston slap go entirely away(such is the world of forged pistons) which is only an inconvenience but not a deal breaker. Once warm, it drives beautifully...retarded power etc.
E30 M3's don't like cold starts in general, and of course with my setup, this is even more true. With how many times I have to cold start my car per day, I just feel like I'm gonna kill it way early.
So, I have a few options.
1) I could quit being a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles, drive the hell out of it, and rebuild it someday sooner than the average motor.
2)The other route is to put it in the hands of someone who will use it in such a way that is more ideal for the setup where it will last them a lot lot longer. Given the nature of the car, the motor, and the mileage, I have a lot of trading/selling power and could get into a more daily driver friendly M3. Plus, I could also get schwarz or silver ;-)
With option 2, I would of course be sacrificing some power since I'd probably end up with a 2.3...but considering that its only the 2.5 bottom end, lightweight flywheel, and chip I think I could get a 2.3 close if not equal with a little bit of love.
Any suggestions? Am I being paranoid or is there some logic here? My car buddies have given me mixed opinions going both ways...
