Here is how it sat yesterday
Today The M3 shell was loaded up and is on it's way to Tennessee.
My wife was actually pretty bummed when I bought the shell, because she had planned on buying me one for some kind of big event, like 10th wedding anniversary, finally finishing college after 20 years or something like that. My plan was to make the shell look like this after doing a proper roll cage (I was planning on a DTM replica cage) then transferring all the cool bits on the white car into the new shell
She has already mentioned this evening that now she can carry through with her original plan.
Enough about that...
I must have been drunk when I measured these for correct fitment.
Still rubbing the strut with 35mm of spacers stacked.
The good news is that they don't bother any sheet metal at the moment... but that could be as wrong as my measuring tape skills. I also swapped the anckerman arms around on the bottom and reset the front toe to an eyeball adjustment.
Newest little problem are these very nicely made sway bar endlinks from bimmerworld are too long. These are the shortest ones bimmerworld sells (9-10.5) so I'm going to shoot them an email and see if they would one off a set of shorter ones. I can adjust the orange tab up a bit, bot not enough to make the sway bar happy and also to not rub the wheels.

A little bump to this thread, I haven't touched the E30 in months as I prepped the M5 for Oktoberfest in Monterey. Click the link in my sig to read about that saga!
So this winter my plans for the E30 are aplenty.
-Finally install schrick cams
-rebuild spare rear subframe
-remove more weight (free)
-install airbox & dyno tune alpha/n chip
-make the wheels fit
-make the rear wing uprights more stable and less ugly.
My first task was to see if the diff I nearly got scammed on was any good or not. In the beginning of the year, I bought a 4.10lsd with supposedly 60,000 miles from ACS Cabrio. I would suggest nobody doing business with him! http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=283937
Since the transaction left me uneasy, and I had a Z3 finned diff cover, I decided to pop off the cover and poke around.
Removing the plugs & bolts was slightly difficult since he had applied a thick coat of paint. The allen wrench didn't want to seat, so out came the big guns.
Found some goo/plastic thing. Not sure where this should go.
A little bit of surface rust. The diff was delivered to me without the speed sensor, so I'm guessing it's just from being exposed for a while. The PO claims he had to drain the fluid before shipping, but who know's how long it's been fluidless. The rust was only on 10 or so gears, and came off with a scotchbrite pad very easily.
As for the workings of the diff, I couldn't turn the two axles by hand, so that's a plus! I wanted to make sure it's in good shape before installing everything, so I welded up a quick tool to hold one axle in place, and applied torque to the other.
I've been taking night classes in welding, and been having a lot of fun learning a new skill!
Basic idea. Simple yes, but after doing some searching, I saw some rather creative ways to lock the axle in place! After drilling 2 holes, I bolted the plate on.
Old RS3's on 16x8 style5's work well as anvils.
In the picture above, you'll notice that I just screwed a bolt into one of the axle hub's holes. This means that the torque applied is either multiplied or divided by a certain percentage depending on the length from the center of the axle to the bolt, and the angle of the torque wrench from center. I didn't feel like doing the math, so this afternoon I drilled a couple of holes in some scrap metal and put a bolt in the middle. The torque wrench broke away at 41ft/lbs, but turned the clutch packs at 42ft/lbs. I found a good bit of info on the spece30 site for what the value should be, and kept seeing 40-65fl/lbs. So my new diff is right at the bottom of acceptable.

Good to see some progress Eric! I will forever be jealous of your garage (until I get one of my own). I still need to see it sometime!318iS Track Rat :nice: www.drive4corners.com

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.
