Good work BTW, nice to see it in there finally.
Bah, this is my first time pulling an engine, I'm doing the entire thing alone and on a budget, a hour from where I live. No amount of planning can truly cover all my bases. :p

Haha, the exhaust hasn't really bothered me so I haven't moved it yet. I'll look into the 2002 reservoir setup. I hadn't really seen the E32 booster/MC documented really and I've been told it's equivalent to the 325ix hardware, so I figured it might work straight up.

          Yanking it back out again

Yanked the tranny and removed the bellhousing etc looking to get at the rear main seal.

So, I'll admit it. I had a new main seal in my hand and I didn't replace it. I couldn't get the old seal out of the housing, and honestly it didn't look that bad. So I said fuck it, threw it back on and called it a day.

Then I got to reassembling the linkage.

I used an idea I read on here, take a section of new fuel hose, about 3mm long (yeah it's a shitty cut but it's hard to trim this stuff down with just a utility knife)

And stick it in the coupler like so (in place of the "spring bushing")

Press it back on and reinstall

I didn't do much other than that, replace another fuel hose, reinstall the motor and connect a few things (install shift linkage, clutch slave cylinder, etc) then that was that. Back to slow progress.

I know, I was pissed. But the bracket is 90 bucks even from IMC and I didn't want to break it.

those housings are tough – i had a hard time getting that rear seal out too.

drilled a hole - then put a self-tapping screw in. Was able to use the claw on a carpenter's hammer to pry/pull on the seal. I also made a cut with a hacksaw into the seal - stopping just before cutting all the way through to the housing.

did you mention something earlier about putting the old pilot bearing back in? it’s the first thing I thought of when I saw you working on that real main seal.

you might be kicking yourself later if the rear seal and the pilot bearing aren't replaced.
may also want to replace seal-carrier gasket

it sucks - but imagine leaks after all that work..

The pilot bearing seemed okay--no play, rolled smooth, no noise or roughness. I think the clutch will wear out before the bearing.

As for the seal, the "outside" seal really isn't the main seal it seems, the inner one seemed like it was in decent condition.

Bottom line, I'd have much preferred to replace them both but there comes a time when enough is enough. I've been aching to drive the damn car and I can't afford to keep fucking around any more. If it leaks, I can deal with it. The NV isn't really the ultimate plan for this car anyway, I just wanted to do a few things that I "might as well" just to cover the bases so it'll last until I figure out what motor's going in there for good. ;)

A vice and a block of wood does WONDERS for the main seal.

                                Slowly getting there...

                                Shit I did
                                Replace thermostat and thermostat housing

                                Install serpentine belt

Install tranny brace and tranny mounts

(shifter in first gear, barely clears the shift console, had to shorten the selector rod by bending it)

                                second gear

                                Reinstall guibo

                                Reinstall driveshaft

Replace/make/install various vacuum hoses, coolant hoses and fuel lines, excuse my shitty utility knife hose cuts:

Bend heater core lines to accommodate intake manifold
Install intake manifold and connect everything up

Find a weird-ass short in the oil level sensor that I'm just going to disconnect for now (hopefully there's no bigger underlying problem)
Install radiator and lengthen aux fan switch wire

                                My soldering station:

Replace engine coolant temp sensor (middle of pic) with E30 one

Lots of shit I'm forgetting about

Shit I still need to do, in no particular order

                                Make adapter (doing that tonight)
Get various nuts and bolts (throttle body bolts, engine mount nuts, intake manifold nuts, CD's nuts)
Install throttle body, intake boot/MAF (or HFM as they call it) and ricer cone filter
Reinstall brake pedal, this is actually probably going to be the hardest to do, such a bitch to get the big pivot bolt through at the top
Convert to a remote brake fluid reservoir (anyone know where I can get DSM parts? I need some weird fittings) and bleed brakes
                                Start it
Take it somewhere to get exhaust fabbed
Drive it home and clean the fuck out of the workplace I used
Cry deeply when more shit goes wrong

Basically right now I'm just trying to keep moving forward and get it running, the coolant hose isn't pretty but it'll hold for now, I tried cutting the stock one down to size but it was necked down and wouldn't fit over the outlets
I'll probably use zip ties to hold the radiator in place for now since the mounting points are different, nothing's really that pretty, I'll figure it out later.
