Okay here's an update to current. First the news/future:

      • Found an s52 package [http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1501976] I am completely in love with, if everything works out this weekend I'll have it home by next week.
        • OBDII '98 s52 + zf 5-speed + all accessories (even the Key, EWS, all of that)
        • At this moment I'm looking to stay OBDII with a few exceptions for the ref out here in California; OBDI Headers, last two o2 sensors/air pump deleted and tuned DME

As far as I know thats what its going to take for me to not throw CELs and have a CARB legal header, and in turn pass smog/ref tests, but if anyone has done the OBDII s52 into an E30 in Cali please feel free drop me any info. (like if you regret it and wished you'd swapped the OBDI while you were at it)

      Now progress on the m20:

      After the covers came off...

This ones terrible but nonetheless dirty

      Moar dirty...

      The culprit

After the first few cans of Breakleen

Before the belts, as clean as I am going to have it for now (due to s52)

      And then there was this

      Contrast

      And anyways

More pictures to come because its more put together now (the m20) and I replaced the thermostat too.

Have soaked the wheels in PBBlaster will have them off today

I think I'm going to still try to finish the m20 a little further so it will sell better, I'm confident it doesn't need a new head, but what the fuck do I know

      I'M FUCKIN EXCITED FOR 24VCLUB

Complete m20 and Tranny package are for sale please make offers

s52 tips? inspiration? lets do it up, I'm pumped

Soon as I figure out whether I'm buying renting or borrowing a cherry picker I'll get a game plan down so I have some direction with the swap to stay on course.

You put a new timing belt on a motor that has a 99.9% chance of being toasted? Pull the head and check the valves. Concentrated simple green and a parts brush works like magic.

First of all, nobody would sack up and tell me it was 99.9% so yea of course I was trying to fix it

Secondly, nobody told me I could visually check the head/valves I was told to put it back together and get a compression test

Lastly why is a motor that needs a new head toast? Seems I can get a new head for a hundred bucks from someone local or buy the full m20 for 350+ thats why I was fixing it in the first place because I was told it was worth it

If its not, no biggie I'll use the maintenance parts for my other m20 and part out whatever I can of the garbage motor, and fuck the people with bad advise I guess.

^I think what he meant to say was to pull the head since you are there. It's a simple thing to do and then you know if the head is good. Plus you can do a head gasket at the same time which is almost always a good idea when you buy one of these used anyway, unless of course you know it's history really well.

Another test is to put the new belt on and see if you can turn the motor over smoothly by hand with a 22mm wrench on the crank bolt.

              That makes more sense

How many revolutions am I looking for on the crank? will I know when to stop? what is not "smoothly"?

You will know smooth vs. rough. You will hear it too. I usually do 4 full revolutions of the motor just to be sure everything is good.

You have pulled the valve cover too and made sure none of the rocker arms are broken or any cracks on the top side of the head? Have someone turn the motor for you (by hand) with the valve cover off and you will be able to see the arms moving to check that everything is operating smoothly.

Of course I still think you should pull the head and do a head gasket change. Makes it very easy to rebuild the head as well. It's not expensive. I spent $400 buying a head, having it dipped (cleaned), clearanced at a machine shop, buying the timing belt kit (waterpump, etc), new head bolts, and buying the head gasket kit to fix a head that was damaged on a car I bought. Timing belt had broken.

Wasn't trying to come off sounding like a jerk. With m20's the head is 90 of the value. Most heads need to be refreshed at around 200k miles anywho. Chances are the valves are slightly bent and need replacing. I'm sure rotating the block to TDC and then the head to TDC seperately was not to good for the valves either. When the head is pulled you can pour gas on top of the valves and see if it is water tight. Or you can take it to a machine shop for a leak down test. They can also mill a thou off for cheap since a 20 y/o head probably does not have a completely flat surface. I took apart my head and dropped it off at a machine shop. For $120 the hot tanked it, decked and diamond surface finished it, did a 3 angle valve job, re cut the exhaust seats, and assembled the head.

Okay hand cranked myself into disappointment.

Buttoned it all up and turned it over for the hell of it, and got nothing. So now I'm going to just pull it and back burner it until my s52 is done

I'll pull the head off and take a look at it all, and take it to a machine shop and get a new head gasket before I sell it off

Also I know its got no 't' but I can't edit forum titles haha

So here's my plan of attack for the swap:

                        • Disconnect the motor from the engine bay
                        • Buy an engine stand
                        • Rent a picker
                        • Pull motor and stand it
                        • Drop the transmission out
                        • Pick up the s52
                        • Rent another picker and pull the s52 off the truck and drop it right into the E30
                        • Install the swap
                        • Get DME tuned
                        • Get/Install OBDI headers
                        • ???
                        • Profit
                        • Get Boners

                        Any input?

How much do they charge to rent engine hoist? I was thinking of just getting a $100 one at harbor freight.

That's what I did... makes life much easier. Used it to pull an m20 and 2 heads with intake and everything attached. Definitely easier than standing on the strut towers trying to lift the manifold/head assembly yourself... I've done it that way too (at the yard).

its only like 150$ for the perfect hoist that folds up and shit

But its only 28$ to rent it all day

so I figured if I'm only doing the pull and drop for now I'll rent and when I get a motor for my bbm I'll buy one and be covered
