bearings and bushings
Here's my take on what wrong with the car - Lots of bearings and bushings
Wurbble when stopped in neutral, goes away when clutch is depressed.
-throwout bearing
A soft, not quite clunk more of a, "turk" sound like an old diesel truck would make from under the center car, can't always hear it
-center bearing
Loud hard clunks over bumps, sharp short speed bumps or potholes or whatever that sound like there's an iron ball in my trunk. Backseat passengers say they feel it in their backs / butts
-diff bushing
Worst of all, there's a whirring sound, like a gigantic DC motor is powering the rear wheels @ the rear wheels, sound increases with speed, not RPM. Sounds like tire rubbing on something, but doesn't stop over bumps or when the suspension gets unloaded. Doesn't sound worse with the windows down

Hey atta kid Tyler, thanks for the PO insight $$$
I will go after that shit, got a new issue today though...hesitation during acceleration, my last fuel pump didn't do this before it went, but I know this ones gotta be on its last legs because it is older than the one I replaced it with, haha
I think I'll just ditch this dog leg and replace all of the shit you've just listed at the same time.
PS: Told you I'd bring it back to life :nice:( f ; _ ; )f

What is the diff bushing?
is it this: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...0%281984-92%29 + http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...0%281984-92%29( f ; _ ; )f

Well I sold the young block out of the bronzit to a r3vver, did the whole pull last night (post top end and shit being pulled already)
So now I've learned engine bay back to the diff, the front suspension stuff I basically get from working stance on my scions for a while, that leaves rear suspension and electrical for me to be Fully Involved basically
Also my friend decided he wants to take the bronzit to the next level, rather than scrap it, so we're gonna build it up have the frame straightened, get whatever new body panels it needs and fix the core support damage with something like this:
Any info on that would be great, even though I'm guessing its just a custom engineered piece.
This weekend I'll be dropping the dshaft out of the schwarz to check the bearings / bushings back there that Tyler thinks are my issues, then replacing whatever needs it( f ; _ ; )f

I've developed a severe hesitation under acceleration, never happens out of gear, feels like a giant has a rope tied to my rear axle and he just randomly tugs on it as he pleases. Is this related to the bushing issues on the diff? the fluid in the diff? or should I be checking fuel/vacuum system. Or perhaps something different altogether...
It is still drivable, once at speeds it usually will stop, or chill out on the sputtering at least.
I had octane boost + fuel system cleaner in 91 octane fuel going through the system the first tank, on the second tank I didn't add anything to the 91 and the sputtering began, I have since added 2 bottles of STP system cleaner and another octane booster, after I added the first system cleaner it continued to drive like shit until the very end of the day the last few miles it was almost sputterless, then this morning back to terrible, so I added a second bottle (to only half a tank of fuel, too) and the octane boost, just to see if it is the fuel system before I take anything apart.
Anyways, any insights are appreciated as usual( f ; _ ; )f

Okay so new fuel filter, old one wasn't that clogged, new one didn't fix it although I feel like it helped after taking 2 trips around the neighborhood.
So could it be my fuel pump is going?
Or my injectors are clogged?
Or I have a vacuum leak?
I guess more importantly is to figure out whether this is from the engine or the drive train, so I can ask around on the forums betterLast edited by Scallywagon; 10-20-2010, 12:35 PM.( f ; _ ; )f

Okay pulled the brand new plugs out, and they are almost completely black, 2 and 6 being the best looking, so this means I am running rich right?
And that means I probably have a bad o2 sensor? Or perhaps my ignition coil isn't sparking hot enough?
I also did compression tests:
1: 152
2: 150
3: 152
4: 152
5: 150
6: 152( f ; _ ; )f

Okay tested the coil and the o2 sensor and neither of them gave me anything, stuck in some better plugs and the misses are better, but its still missing, and the bottom line is the plugs were new, so I'm running rich
my Idle is cranked up to 900~ should I turn it down to 750~ and could that be part of my problem?
Going to move this to the M20 forum now( f ; _ ; )f

Alright, miss fire hath been smoothed out
Was the computer, and of course my hindsight clarity kicked on, and I bet there's a chip or a tune on the old one calling for more fuel from bigger injectors that were switched out after the T-belt snapped before it was sold to me, should have thought about that shit first
Oh well; a prime example of why field work > text books
I'm happy to say its back to being really fun to drive. With the valve job and the new distributor it's really the best E30 I've gotten to drive so far
Can't wait to fix more of the issues and get really comfy with it
Thanks again for everyone's opinions/advice( f ; _ ; )f

Think I'm getting a bunch of my maint. parts from a forum member in trade for my shell and the remaining parts.
Which means I will be dropping the whole drive train out of the car for a pretty good overhaul... Thanksgiving Weekend?
Pretty excited as the sounds have gotten worse in a couple of areas; the sound I think is the differential bushings is making sort of a rolling clunk at low speed coasting to a stop, as well as a clunk every time the drive train is loaded and unloaded, and the sound I believe to be a seized caliper (+ some sort of damage or no pad or something, I haven't inspected yet) Makes it feel like I'm sliding on a cinder block on my driver's front brakes at the end of my stops.
Oh, and the speed-o-meter needle randomly dies for short periods of time, and comes back.
So the front brakes, diff bushings, CSB, CTB, and rear wheel bearing on the pass. side should all be getting replaced, any have to be done jobs I should add while I'm at it?Last edited by Scallywagon; 11-17-2010, 07:56 PM.( f ; _ ; )f
