The e36 rack swap was one of my favorite changes. You will love it.

When I was putting my rack in (without the motor obviously) I almost made that same mistake. Got to thinking why would BMW put them in that way because if they came loose the bolt would fallout. Then it hit me you wouldn't be able to remove the steering rack without removing the motor.
