Head is at the machine shop getting cleaned/surfaced, crankshaft is getting shaved and knifed. I am shaving the piston skirts down a tiny bit then off to get balanced tomorrow.

Project summer cruise is almost there

How much is the shave and rebalance of the crank going to cost? Without the knife edging if you happen to know. I'm right in the middle of building a 2.8 M20 also and I'm going to be taking the crank to the shop any day now. It'd be nice to have a heads up.

I was quoted 200-300 for knifing/shaving and balancing the crank. I am a friend of the shop though...so hope that helps?

I would guess for you it would be around 150ish

What a crazy few weeks! got the crankshaft back from the machine shop =) FYI to anyone that wants a ball park for knifing...it is around 300 just for the work. Then it was an extra 250 for the m52 crank. For the full stroker rebuild we are in the 3k area now. JUST for the motor...

Worth every bit though, all brand new. Only stuff that is being reused is the block, eta rods, b25 pistons and the blank 885 head and intake valves. Everything else is new.

            Nice huh!?

It is so sexy, too bad it is going to be hidden in the block =(

So here is the point I am at now, head is now a 100% rebuild. Everything but the intake valves needed to be replaced. They were brand new xD

I sourced the head out because my construction Co(Father owns) picked up a full in and out house remodel. So I don't have anytime for the car until the weekend =(

Head is due to be done tomorrow...he has said that 7 times already. Kinda mad right now about that.

I am power washing the block and degreasing again so I can paint it. The colors my Brother picked out are amazing!

Right now I am trying to source one b25 short skirt piston so I can get the bottom end done. The issue with the piston is I started grinding one down to clear the crankshaft...then I remembered I had them remove more on the crank so I did not have too. FACE PALM So if you have one short skirt b25 piston PLEASE PM ME!!!!

So all I need it the head back and one b25 piston.

Also have a mishimoto radiator to replace the shitty OEM one the b25 came with.

Have you even mocked up the motor to see if the pistons will clear the crank?

What was the final measurement for the material removed from the crank to clear the piston skirts?

I just got my stuff back from the machinist after 6 weeks and I neglected to ask what the final figure was. Early on, he told me it would be 0.130". Not sure if that was the final measurement, unfortunately.

Also unfortunately, when we put the first rod and piston in and rotated the crank, the counterweight still rubbed on the piston skirt ever so slightly. So much for the machinist double checking his work!! All six cylinders were the same story.

One other question, what are you doing for the front crank seal spacer? Don't think you mentioned it anywhere. I bought one from der Affe.

I gave the shop the block, rods and bearings to make sure before I pay.

The measurements were taken from the rod base and they are: 3.400" then it was knifed.

So awesome, when I have money, a real m20 stroker will be in the works.

The rods and bearings aren't the issue. He asked about the pistons.

                        And I answered it =)

You need the block, rods, bearings and pistons to make sure the crankshaft clears. Without everything you cannot rotate it correctly to view each piston rotate. I thought I was clear enough, sorry guys.

I made sure enough was removed on the crankshaft to solve the issue of clearance rotation. If anyone wants to build one of these the specs I provided WILL make them clear.

Did you knife-edge the crank to clear pistons or to cut through the oil better? If it was for piston clearance your machinist should have ground on the rod-throw side and not the main side.

Waiting on two pistons to come in so I can get the bottom end done. Lost one and ground one before I went the knifed and ground crank path. So right now I am doing things to the vert(pedal swap/bracket, euro bumpers etc)

That is 110% correct, they are a bit hard to get ahold of. Once I did it was NO issue, told the owner what I was doing and he got it out the door in two weeks. The lazer cuts and welds are solid and fit AMAZING to the bottom end.

I knifed it for two reasons: 1. clearance of the stock pistons 2. performance and they go hand in hand. I could have gone the cheap route and ground the pistons down. But I am trying to beat every pony out of this m20.

I don't have a normal camera till Sept, so hope a computer shot works. Head is done with everything replaced and MSDS headers on.
