The past two days have been wrenching days.

First I got my washer that had been trimmed down a mm and slid that on the front of the engine with the crankshaft bolt to complete the bottom end assembly. My solution without a lathe was, yes I'll admit it, sandpaper. It kept the surface nice and flat and did the job nicely.

    The engine was then ready.

The AWD causes many headaches for numerous reasons on the iX. Mostly because the front diff sits right where the steering rack goes and the entire assembly cannot be lined up with the front subrame assembled, it hits the power steering rack. There is also another shaft going to the front diff that complicates things as well. Bottom line the engine went in with much pushing shoving and swear words and then was tilted up to the correct angle. Then the subframe was raised and bolted back up.

I had a shot of the under carriage that I took, but I forgot to host it, so here is one front the ix registry.

Also found a shot of the entire iX drivetrain assembly. Its pretty big... (not my photo)

Going into its home. Getting friendly with the new wiring harness and sensor for motronic 1.3.

The start of day two had to solve the CID and CPS sensor/bracket problems as well as oil pressure and oil level sensors, starter connector, and a few other miscelaneous problems as well as connecting up the exhaust and driveshafts back up. The slave cylinder was reinstalled (new) as well as the lines to it and the system was bled. Needed to figure out how to route some of the wiring because the motronic 1.0 has some differences and does not have wires going across the front of the engine between the timing cover and pulleys. I also had the bracket/ sensor for the oil sender unit in the block so I switched that out from the same iX I got the wiring harness and ecu from. It lives on to fight another day in this one!

Then the covers were put on and double checked.

And finally the wires and radiator/ coolant and oil were added.

The car wouldn't fire. The starter would click but nothing. It turns out the starter ground was only finger tight. After tightening that and giving a few seconds of cranking fuel rushed into the fuel injectors and the beast roared to life! When I say roar I mean it as that nasty exhaust leak i still there.

    Click on the above photo....

It sounds like a diesel truck and lives up to its name smoking up about as much as a labor day barbeque, but the clutch engages, the ecu and motronic swap is a success and there were no leaks! The smoke I believe is the pre start engine lube that was all over the pistons in the engine. It should take a while to burn off but I have noticed the smoke has decreased after only a small time running. One of the cylinders (maybe 2) were not firing in this video due to the fuel line turning near the new injector harness and disconnecting it. Apparently the fuel rails have slight differences so my mechanic had one with the inlet and return up at the front by the fpr. I swapped that out and it runs much smoother now and idles.

This is the first time the car has moved under its own power in over a year and has been outside in the sun in about the same amount of time. Excuse the mess/ bumper/ valence/ grilles.

I think the 17s look pretty good on black and the chrome side molding trim looks great.

There is my other iX looking on in curosity from afar, scared of the loud noises.

I think the running problem is caused by a bad cps sensor (rabbits and bad wiring) that we figured was worth a shot. The CID sensor may or may not be working, we just put it on there to try to get it going.Without it it double fires and could be causing a backfire/ un smooth running. Thats what you get switching from the motronic 1.0 bell housing sensors to these. I'd like to make sure the injectors are in good shape but mainly glad it is running. Will try to get a new sensor for next week as well as some diff oil and suspensin components. The front end is way out of alignment and a tie rod is held together by a zip tie!!! Also need to put on swaybar endlinks and fix the instrument cluster's tach before it is road ready. Until then, you'll just have to watch the video I posted!

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Thanks guys! Got some more work done on the car today.

Fixed the gaping hole in the exhaust with some exhaust sealer and a bandage and man does it sound so much better now! More like a car and less like a dragster. Also got the alignment closer to fixed as it was about 20 degrees from straight. Hooked up the o2 sensor and got it idling nicely.

It seems the car has a vacuum leak because after applying small throttle the engine does not rev nicely, it stumbles and misfires. I think the problem has been narrowed down to the intake manifold gaskets because after spaying some brake cleaner on them the idle would change tone and become much smoother for a while. We swapped throttle bodies to make sure the TPS wasn't the problem and the ECU and the problem still lingered.

Any ideas on what it could be besides a vacuum leak?

Thanks, hoping to get a test drive tomorrow.

Yeah it has been quite a journey. Today the intake manifold vacuum leaks were address with new gaskets. The intake was removed and reassembled. I also found out the connector on the ecu to car harness controls the tach and econometer gauge and should be working once connected to a few pins.

After a no start issue and tightening some coolant leaks the car pulled out of the garage and has traveled 0.3km as of now haha. The alternator is missing the voltage regulator and the tranny cover is missing to finish bolting it up in front of the oil pan. The idle is steady now and throttle response is sharp. I may have a steering rack issue as it was making some funky noises at 1 turn. Swaybar links need to be put back on and brakes bled then I may try to trek it home.

Here is the video of improved idle and throttle response. Click to watch

                UPDATE time!

Last week I tried to bring smokey home but the alternator from the junkyard was missing a voltage regulator so I decided to wait and replace it. Today I went and swapped alternators, got a pair of swaybar endlinks, brakes bled, topped off the diff fluid and brought a friend to try to bring her home.

                First Impressions:
-I wasn't sure what to expect with everything, the motor, the brakes, the steering rack that was making noise at lock.
-The clutch and lightweight flywheel make for a quite lethal combination. The grab point is very small and the clutch is very grabby to the almost halfweight OEM flywheel. The car shudders on takeoff and I thought it was a problem at first but realizing its just the characteristics of the combo. The flywheel is nice and the engine revs fast and very nicely. Perfect for downshifts!!
-The engine is strong! As a 3.0L 9.5:1 should be. After about a mile all of the assembly lube burned off and I could just relax and listed to the sounds of the car. It has an interestin whine but the exhaust has a cool note. I am impressed considering stock fuel intake and exhaust systems are coping well. The torque is very nice. A flash of your right foot and you're already shifting gears.
-The 3.64 is great, I no longer feel like the engine is screaming at highway speeds. With the torque this feels great.

Ok enough observation I still have to get the tach and spedo working (related to the e to i wiring harness swap) and get a few other things straightened out. Any comments or suggestions?

Here is the car, I drove back with no hood or grille but got them back on once I was home. can you say 4x4??

                  Have a beer! It drives!

I would be interested to see how it compares to my rebuilt stock motor.

Seth I would be too, as yours probably has the 3.91s? I need to get a few things sorted out and would love to compare them.

Ah yes and some actual pictures this time. I had this lip given to me and zip tied it up for the time being.

                      And I did some sanding...
