Real spirit working outside when there is snow on the car! I for one am not tired of rally-x builds, I just want hear a little more of the thought process behind some of the more innovative/different decisions, such as an opinion on mudflaps.
Don't I still owe you a promised shift knob? Next time I am up that way I will have to drop it off.
On mine I use the RallyArmor "basic" SUV mudflaps. Since my car sits tall, the SUV flaps are longer than the standard car ones, and have more coverage area. The only downside is that I can't kick mud on to Spencer's windshield when he's behind me in grid :(
On my WRX I've had the RallyArmor urethane mudflaps for almost 4 years now and they're still in "like new" condition even though I thrash that car all year and in the winter. The urethane RA's are the best out there, IMO, for a street-driven car. They keep the car clean and also look good (IMO). I would get them for any "nicer" street-driven car. They are a bit too flexible for a rally car though.
The rally car got the basics (which are more rigid plastic) because they were cheap (like $20). I had to fab my own hardware for mounting them, but that was no problem. They held up find to a full season.
The basics are probably pretty similar to what Spencer got above...not sure how much those are sold for on here.
btw, with us rallycross guys, the main thought process behind any innovation or choice of parts generally goes like this:
1. what is cheap
2. what is tough
3. what is cheap and tough
4. what can I make out of crap I already have sitting around the garage
5. who cares what it looks like

I think that nails the spirit of cheap car racing on or off road! The thought process and comments on mud flaps are exactly what more build threads need!
Not the flaps themselves really. Just how they mount. Idk, I'm just scared I might lose one. I'll probably make myself some extra mounting points and some aluminum reinforcements.
I have your intake on my m50 car and I am very pleased with that. ;)
here's how my RA's are mounted, if it gives you any ideas:
rear (home-bent bracket with two bolts + a bolt into the fender lip)
front (the two inner bolts just go through the wheel well and are nutted in the inside of the footwell. Outer bolt is into the fender lip and has proven to be very sturdy).
They are just mud flaps and they get the job done, if used right they will be thrashed no matter what. They have been proven tough on local rally car e30's.
If you ever want to try a new configuration, josh, spencer, and I will be happy to be testers!
Also was able to start on the front suspension, however I was cut short as it started to snow and ended up with a little over an inch of snow by the end of the night... with only more to come supposedly. I pick the worst times to do suspension work.
I did the same. It was so cold doing my Condor M3 CABs that I gave up after 1.
Since I'm back at college, its really hard to work on the car since I only come back on weekends.... However, I should be driving it tomorrow and take it to college to work on where I am living. Did a couple things this morning with the exhaust and such...
Since the exhaust was one whole piece (the front and cat-back was welded together), I had to cut them apart in order to use my new front section. Started off by using what I guess was a damaged blade which shattered after about 5 seconds of cutting.
Got them apart and ground down the rear section so it can slide on to my new front section I got with a spare m42 I have.
Also had trouble with the o2 sensor which I ended up stripping out when using a pipe wrench and heat(also soaked in pb blaster the 2 nights before) to get it out. Going to be looking for a new one.
Any suggestions on a muffler to put on this thing? I want it to be throaty, but not too bad at WOT.... m42s with 4.10s get annoying at 3.5k cruising for about an hour and a half(my drive to summit point). Right now it has a stock cat with the stock resonator deleted(has a small little 8" one in its place).... just need a muffler. I think a glasspack would be too loud.
Also made an attempt at test fitting the KaMotors mudflaps(the rally versions). The rear design should hold up pretty well. Going to make 1 or 2 more mounting points for the fronts though.
My only concern is on the exhaust side where the flap will be somewhat close to the exhaust... I might have to cut the flap a little bit just so it doesnt heat up the flap too much. Some pictures for reference:
I'm going to fit the fronts later in the week after I get the exhaust and rears done and mounted nicely.... they do look pretty cool though. Thanks KA. Might buy another set for my other car.
The last thing was taking the old antenna out and putting the delete plug on. I only test fit it today because I want to wait until its a little bit warmer(or get the car in the garage) to use the sealer so it can dry a little better. Going to use the same 3M windshield sealant I used for the diff bushing to seal it.
Also transferred my trendy roofrack over to the car from my other e30. Super trendy ultra rallycar points acquired. But I actually do use the rack a lot as I go snowboarding quite frequently.
yes trim up that muffler side, I leave it big because some cars use magnaflows, others use glass packs and some use stock so I just trim it enough to clear most setups but not all setups.
Went and test drove it today and at first I had to come right back home cause my brakes were pretty weak. After I rebled them, I went back out and I have to say.... the car feels like a completely different car. It is making me more and more excited for the upcoming season cause I know the car will handle 10x better than last season.
I still haven't finished the exhaust yet as I am still doing some research as to what muffler to run. I've been watching youtube videos and deciding what to go with. This is the room I have to work with. 30" from where it ends now to the back of the valence. I will also cut of the mud flap if need be.
