My Grandfather's Scout

Made a tool to remove and install the LSD clutches.



Rebuilt LSD with ring gear reinstalled.



Pinion installed with setup bearings.



Carrier installed with setup bearings.



Checking backlash.



Checking/adjusting gear pattern.



After getting everything where a wanted it, permanent assembly with the new bearings.



I'm changing the oil level in the axle with a different rear cover so i blocked the original vent hole in the axle tube.



Made a new vent hole that will use a hose.



Prime.



Paint.

Axle shafts with new bearings, seals and beefy axle retainers ready to install.



I'm putting late 70's Scout II brakes on these Scout 800 axles and the backing plate were really worn where the shoes rub on them so i welded them up and made a fixture to mount them on the mill.




Machined flat and true again.



Both backing plates repaired.



Size comparison of my original rear drums and the new ones going on.





Made new brake lines.





New diff cover all smoothed and painted.



Had to weld up and redrill my spring plates for the larger axle tubes and u bolts.

The scout did awesome, massive grip and fun times !

This must have been the year that ALT had massive traffic jams due to light snow. I almost had forgotten about that crazy year.

Set up bearings are used so i can remove and install the bearings/races by hand instead of using a press and pullers and risking damage to the bearings and the adjustment shims underneath them. I can change shims much faster as well.

I used steel brake line and bend it around various things like sockets and tubing. I have a 2" rod of delrin with a notch cut out of one end to bend the line right out of the flare nut like at the junction at the top of the diff cover.
