        1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

        Did some things Sunday...

My friend Oliver came over to help me fit the gruppe 2 kit and see how screwed I was for fitment because I know body kits could be nightmares.

Rocker panel sideskirt cover thing had to come off and then the flare fit perfect!

After the front, we added the rear flare

        And finally the front apron.

This didn't fit well because my front nose was hit and pushed in. But if the car was straight it looks like this kit fits very well. Nothing a rivet can't pull into place.

I wanted to mock these up because I will be bringing these to a very well known 2002 shop and they will be creating a mold from these flares. I'll let them announce themselves once they have them in production. But this is great! Because I can get a replacement flare if I mess one up here in CA instead of paying shipping from Europe

I made marks on where to cut in case they have my flares still when I'm ready to cut.

I then rented a spring compressor from Kragen and popped the springs off and removed the struts from the housings.

I will be prepping these for the IE sleeve kit that is in the mail. My TIG welder is supposed to show up today as well according to UPS Tracking. I still need to buy a tank/helmet/gloves/filler rod and a cart to start welding, but I have ran out of money with the holidays.

I stopped here because I was lazy. I'll do more this week.

Thanks. This is the first time I've had a real garage and want to set it up nice. Plan to make a metal welding work bench with a mounted vice and grinder/polisher, air compressor, air tools and a hydraulic press. I hope to have everything I'd possibly need to do a car job. I already have mostly everything except mentioned above. What else am I missing?

Haha. That's on the list when I buy a house. I'm renting. So can only do so much.

Only thing is I want another Datsun 240z.. I'd love to grab some gruppe 2 flares and have at it with an 02 but I just don't know which way I'd really be happy.

Might also feel that way because I've never been in a mobile 02

                          1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

So I continued to strip the struts down in prep to shorten and weld on a sleeve coil over kit.

Brake lines were so hard to get off. I had cut the rubber hose because I couldn't break them free in the fender well.

                          Then off came the caliper

Then I removed the hub cap with a flathead screwdriver and to my suprised the cotter pins were missing and the nut came off easy and the hub/rotor just slid right off!

                          Was great :)

To install the coil over sleeve kit you have to take off the original spring perch.

I grabbed the "trusty" $20 harbor freight grinder.

Started at the drain hole and ground through around the strut.
                          And Off it Came!

Then did the same to its evil twin!

Need to get a table saw and metal blade from my dad to make the cuts to the strut tube. 2" will be cut from the center of the strut. 3" from the top. and 12.75" from the bottom. So I cleaned up the garage since it was dark and getting cold.

Put a bunch of crap in the trunk :)

So excited to start using this machine :) I've been watching all kinds of youtube videos. I can't wait to get an Argon Tank and Helmet/Gloves and start welding!

I picked this welder because it was only 50 lbs, could run off 110v and 220v, could do any metal I pretty much will see. Can do much thinner than I'll need and can go pretty thick for automotive purposes. Can do 1/4" aluminum in one pass with some pre heat as well according to Miller. I hope to teach myself. I taught myself MIG, so any pointers, tips for teaching myself are appreciated, I plan to get a bunch of scrap and start doing beads with no filler, then I'll practice with filler once I feel ready. Then I'll tackle my subframe, then coil overs.

Do it! Welding is so fun! And resourceful! I will be making all my Christmas presents now haha. No more malls! Just the metal market.

I'm running IE sleeves, shorter bilstein sports, eibach springs, Ireland camber plates and offset spacers. Going to visit Ireland Engineering Thursday to pick up my stuff since I'm heading to SoCal for New Years.
