    King Kong's E30 Build - 90 325i Coupe

Welcome to King Kong's E30 build thread!
This build thread is meant to journal my build experience, the friends and relationships that are made along the way, the people to avoid within this community, and an open honest account of what it takes/took me to restore a car that I have always loved since high school.

In the late '80s and early '90s I instantly gravitated towards the E30... but never had the funds to buy one... As school and life happened, 25 years later, I began to look for an E30. I quickly found out that I knew nothing about the car, except that I loved the design and the iconic aesthetics of the E30.

Countless days searching on the internet for information about E30s and hours at a time every night reading forum threads, posts, classifieds, and local sale listings, I finally felt comfortable to make a purchase.... that is what I thought.

In early October of 2015, I ran across this local Craigslist ad:

I was very excited!! Looked like an awesome car... I immediately called the seller... Talked to him about the car for about 20 minutes on the phone and was reassured that everything listed on the ad was true and that he also had a carfax that he emailed to me. I made an offer, $3500...yes.. it was a bit low from his asking, but I knew he would counter. Well... he stood firm at $5,000 and said basically he had another higher offer on the table. So, I felt a little disappointed but decided that I'll just have to keep searching.

2 hours later, he called me back and said if I am willing to pick up the car that night, he would sell it to me for $4,000. This was a Friday night, and I live in Orange County.... it would literally take 2 hours to drive up to North Los Angeles to get the car. I decided to agree and had my brother take me up to LA to see and pick up the car. It was 9pm when I first saw the car.... Yes... I was overly excited, the car was running, and everything looked decent. The seller seemed to be a young college student that had inherited the car from his father. He mentioned he had lost the pink slip to the car but had all the paperwork transfer info ready to hand to me (I actually got on the phone with his father and spoke to him to confirm this information). The Carfax showed no accidents and and two ownership transfers (originally from his Uncle, to his Father, then to him). All the maintenance records and paperwork he mentioned would be sent to me along with a missing fog light. The final item was the smog check that he assured me was done 4 months ago and passed.... but I would still need to get one because 3 months is the limit for smog checks in order to transfer title. So foolishly without seeing all the signs that told me I should have walked away, I trusted him and paid for the car, took the car into my possession, and took a photo of his ID.

I drove the car to the local gas station.... I was actually still so amped about finally owning an E30. I even took these two photos and posted it up on the R3V Facebook page while getting gas!!

That night, while on the freeway, I noticed the temp gauge was on high and the check engine light was lit... I texted the seller and he said the gauge was broken and the car is perfect. By the time I got home, the car was steaming out of engine bay and leaking.... I messaged the seller, and all he could say was that the car was perfectly fine when he had it. Well, I am sure you guys all know what comes next out of these stories....

The car is missing an AC compressor or AC unit... AC hoses are attached to... NOTHING

    Car is leaking coolant

I also did my own full Carfax report...
Car actually had a minor accident when it hit a fixed object.
The following day, I towed the car to a family mechanic.... it was determined that the car had a blown head gasket. It would not pass smog and title could not be transferred. Brought this to the seller's attention and always got an excuse of why it happened. I tried to work it out with him after one week but it was going no where and I could have pursued ways to get my money back or what not... but I decided to just keep the car and the unresponsive seller would eventually get what he deserved from his dishonesty. He is actually a R3V member as well!!

    November 2015
Finally got the car to pass the smog check... completed the title transfer and received the pink slip to the car (Also learned that the seller stole registration stickers for the past 4 years to put on the car...good thing I explained the situation to the DMV, they took the original plates with the stickers and the back charges and fines/penalties are going to be attached to his fathers DMV record when he gets his registration bill...that's going to be a big one).

So, this is how I came to owning my first E30. After reading what I am posting, it sure sounds pretty discouraging... but the real story, excitement, and journey is about to begin!!!

Looks like a pretty clean car, interesting color, looks repainted? Maybe I am just unfamiliar with that color but, it doesn't look stock to me.

Anyways, I would take the picture of the previous owner's license down. Sounds like he was a very dishonest person but, seems a little "eh" to post his driver's license up on r3v, especially after all your just went through over the last 2 months to get the title/transferred and such.

Anyways, nice looking car. Can't wait to see the build!

Took your advice.. took down the PO's ID.... =)

The car body is in good condition fortunately. The car is repainted a flat cement gray color. The original color is Delphine Gray... which is the color in the engine compartment. The plan will be to strip the paint off anyways... it was a very poor paint job if you see it from 2 feet away... Car is very photogenic... LOL

        The Search for a Builder

So, after the car was registered and legally transferred over... I went to a few shops to discuss the project at hand.
I had decided that my first E30 would keep a M20 Engine and upgraded performance parts would be added to give the car it's own characteristics. My goal is not to restore the car to original condition, but to retain it's classic lines and overall design but to enhance the driver's driving experience. This car would be driven 2-3 times a week and would remain as an art piece in the middle of my interior design studio office.

Here is the car as it sit's in the parking lot for over a month...

Here is the current M20B25 Engine....

Here is the current interior condition of the car...

My first stop was over at Bullet Performance in Costa Mesa, CA. They were referred to me by another local shop as they have a reputation on working on mainly BMW's. I visited their facility and it is very large, clean, and professional. They have 6-8 lifts and all were occupied by various BMW's. There was also two E30 M3's sitting out front belonging to other clients.
I talked to one of the mechanics who I knew previously who had worked at another shop. He also owned an E30 and was very helpful in answering my questions and also gave me a rough estimate and timeframe to re-build my M20B25 Engine. Price and timeframe seemed very reasonable and my involvement in the project would be based on how involved I wanted to be. The project would also be focused on keeping the Naturally Aspirated M20 engine and getting it rebuilt to be a solid OEM ++ Engine. After agreeing with him, he introduced me to one of the owners who would have to sign off and agree to the proposal. After speaking with the owner, it seemed like he only recommended that I swap the engine...obviously the cost of doing such was a few times higher but it also involved more than what I wanted to do to the car. I strongly believed that if I wanted to do an engine swap project for the E30, I would have Bullet Performance do it. As this was not my goal/intentions, I ended up deciding to continue to search for a shop/builder that would have a vision that would be more in line with mines.

Searching through the forums... I stumbled upon Bimmerheads... there are many post regarding these guys and they were all positive! Matt, MR 325 seemed to be very active on the forums and was able to provide answers and insight to many of the topics that are discussed.
I emailed Bimmerheads and had a response the next day regarding my proposed project. I followed up with a phone call and was briefly confirmed some of the details for the build. They automatically made me feel very comfortable with working with them, they were also up in LA.. so only about 60 minutes away. I ended up meeting with Shant, Myster-E at the Bimmerheads. It was a small shop, but it was very well stocked with machining equipment, cores, and parts that were only for engine building! Right there and then, I knew this was the shop that would build my engine.
Shant went through all the details, the pros and cons, and his suggestions versus my wish list.

The project was going to be an M20 engine, but it would be a 3.1 stroker. The engine would be rebuilt completely and the clutch was also going to be replaced. Then new engine would be sporting the Bimmerheads M20 Race 885 Cylinder Head.
Engine would be ported and polished, new rockers, cam gear, cam seals, cam gear cover, rotor mounts, studs, oversized valves, valve seals, valve springs, etc. all weighted and balanced.
I am pretty mechanically challenged so I entrusted everything to Shant and Matt. They also would be sending me photo's of the engine build as it was coming together.

So on December 21, 2015, the car left my parking lot and made it's way up to Bimmerheads in Los Angeles....
Thank you to Emergency Hookers my car was loaded and delivered with no issues within 2 hours.

What a piece of sh*t. (the PO obviously)
I'm from the LA county and I'm not ashamed to say that this type of behavior is getting more and more popular and the class of people owning these cars is declining especially in this area.
The scene around here didn't use to be this way. So much junk and junky people nowadays and the fact that the father was in on it confirms how trashy they are. I'm glad you were able to pin the fees on his name.

Sorry for my rant and I'm sorry for your troubles. Congrats on the car and I hope you make her your very own special thing.
Matt and Shant are GOOD people. The good people of CA who care about these cars are a tightly knit community who take care of eachother.
          Welcome!

            Bimmerheads Artwork!!!

So it took only several weeks... but the progress is awesome!

I must say... I can't wait to go to the shop to see the actual parts!! Shant sent me some photo's of some of the parts that were finished and are ready to be assembled into the engine. From the pictures, these engine parts just look like art pieces!!

I'm really floored by how this is coming out!

Many props to Bimmerheads for making this happen!! Thank you Shant and Matt!!

Enjoy these pics as I have enjoyed looking at them and sharing them with my friends!!

There will always be those types of people around... even here in the OC.. if not equally or more in abundance!!... Well, I am a true believer in karma... so what goes around will come around.
Fortunately, I am lucky enough to be able to still continue my project build. I know that if some other members were to pick up this car believing it to run smoothly, they may have been screwed out of $4,000....
Anyways... Thanks for the welcoming message!!.. I'm going to need a lot of help in sourcing parts for this car in the upcoming days as the build is now on an accelerated schedule because it's going into the bodyshop/paint shop to be stripped down to metal. I will be posting a bit here if I can't find stuff in classifieds or vendors. Thanks for the help in advance!

I like that you're doing a 3.1 stroker with their race head. What Compression ratio/pistons are you doing? Not sure what kind of budget you're on, but some of the IE Race headers and a set of RHD ITB's would top off that 3.1 stroker nicely.

                    Thanks Northern!
                    The compression ratio is 9.97:1
Already ordered the IE Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers.... Just debating on getting a cat-back exhaust system from:
                    1) Stromung
                    2) Eisenmann
Not sure at the moment as both will have to be modified to fit... so the sound may be altered?....

As for running ITB's... I would love to... but I will only do it if I know that it is reliable for a 2-3 time per week kinda car. I don't want to have the car at the tuning shop all the time... I don't know if there is a reliable tune/setup for ITB's?... I don't know much about ITB's.. so hopefully this community can educate me if it is a good option to have/get for a 2-3 time per week driven car. (and... I am not concerned about the $$$/HP ... Turbo vs. ITB discussion that I always see in regards to people who ask about ITB.. haha..)

get it running with stock manifold and computer and run it in before you worry about fancy ECU, ITB etc

i ran mine in on stock ECU and chip, M30AFM and a set of 21lb injectors

you'll probably want to sort out a MS Pnp sometime after then otherwise your giving up a bunch of potential. there should be some reliable tunes around. you dont need fancy wasted spark or fully sequential either IMO

I can't decide whether to strip this paint and re-paint the same but with a much better quality and experienced body shop.... or go with the BMW Carbon Black (which is a very dark midnight blue)..... or.. 3rd option would be to go darker than the original Delphine Grey....
