    Work In Progress.

I am hoping I can back log all the previous dates up to when acquired the car. May take a few weeks... Years... I acquired the car August 2015, So I have some catching up to do! Running a BMW shop FULL time changes priories, but since the E30 has been running again it has got me motivated to keep at it!

I need to update the front page...

Even if I hit the lottery. I don't shuffle though cars like most. I get a vision and then get stuck on it. The vision is the motivation, the driving is the reward.

    This year goals:
Finish wiring - Stearo - Started
    Finish mounting Sub - Started
Reroute gas tank vent - Started
    Build seat delete - Planning
Finish plumbing rear brake lines - Started
Swap out mock up abs unit for Motorsports calibrated unit.
Reinforce trailing arms, Powder coat, Swap out AKG RTAB with STIM Tech RTAB - Started
    Tidy Rust - Started
Swap in E30/ E36 geometry control arms from 96+ arms, SRS concepts added caster and moved wheel to far forward.., Aluminum control arms, Roll center? MRT DTM Arms - Planning
Mount Front sway bar, E46 swaybar fits well.. , Plan out rear swaybar Planning
Mount mirror, E36 style, Got knocked off
    Work on Cam timing
    Dyno Tune
Install upholsterer'd door cards and seats
Fit 245 under factory fenders with proper compliance - Probably later..
    Drive and debug

    MAY 2021 - The Vintage!

    ? - Track
    ?- Long drives

2022 - Rust, Rollbar, rubber / truck bead liner floors
2023 - Carbon bumpers, Roof, hood, maybe trunk, headliner
    2024 - Paint
    2025 - Custom wheels

All this is work load dependent, I've tried to step back from work some and enjoy what got me originally into this. But I find weeks / Months where that doesn't happen.. Years.,.. And that makes this project what it is.

I'm sure you've all came across that older fellow who has had a car in pieces in his garage for 20 years.. what a terrible feeling that would be.

September, October, November, December to come.

I went back to focusing on work.A delay I had was half a roll of film left in my camera since The Vintage and needed to shoot the rest of it before I mailed it out for develop, its a different process than any one does local. Hope to ship out this week and have an update next week.

A bottom end rebuild parts are being gathered, should see pistons in a few more weeks.

Ive started to disassemble the interior to get the door cards redone and chase and water leak.

Few items on the off season punch list:
      Front window gasket, New windshield?
MRT DTM Control arms. Loose scrub radius, Loose caster 11 deg to 7 degrees. Going to gain some roll center and camber gain, Loose some weight jacking. Took some measurements, Made some graphs, well see what the before and after are..
Bottom end rebuild - 11.5:1 pistons with 140MM rods, S50 crank, ATI damper, JBR Chomoly flywheel, Clutch masters clutch, Balanced ect.. We'll see if it makes power to 8K
Going to see if Rabid Racing S54 throttles will squeeze in with moving the booster over. Still running maf
Finish bushing the window trim aluminum, I found oven cleaner should take off the anodizing.
Fit new 245/40R17 Falkin Rt660 for track use, they're wider than my Dunlap Z2'x
Fooling with colors for a LTW flag
Spoiler and maybe a splitter - No rush
I am having a hard time finding a New Bumper shroud for the Right Front 51 11 1 937 388

The Vintage 22 has already released there dates, I hope to get a few track days in before then. May, 19th, 2022

        Progress? Mileage 10157
Back to work work work and sneaking in drives to get away... AND... I have to decided to build a bottom end for this motor... I have cams that are to big for the pistons and they are solid lifter for higher revs... I guess so... S54 in the back room waving at me... hey dummy I'm stock will make the same power as a built S50/2...Ill pretty much end up with a S50 with S54 bolts ons...... HAH

        Engine Rebuild Purchases:
Engine chains iwis racing, Guide rails, Tensioners, ARP Main studs, Hack Racing oil pump chain tensioner, Piston squirters.

Also, eyeing the MRT DTM control arms, I really want to pull some caster and get the wheel centered. Take some scrub radius if the space is there.

Id like to keep a mileage update on each monthly update.

        Welcome, New phone, New photos.

Late night cruising, I'm in love with how all the back lighting turned out. I could use some amber lighting under the dash though.

A photo of the oil pump tensioner retrofit I decided to go with

Its been about one year since I've been on track, Lusting to go racing again

        WORK WORK WORK:
726 is Coming along together, This thing could run before the new year. Highest Priority in the shop right now.
Tubular upper arms, Tank finally ready, Roll over valve in place, Fires suppression, reassembly

Vapor BLAST - Finally a local who can do this service!!!

        Oh look, unnecessary weight

To close on, I dedicate this hardware to my buddy Hayes.

          Progress!
          Engine parts:
Last of the engine parts are in! I sent my cam trays and ACL rod bearings out to get WPC treated and they are back. CP pistons and SP rods arrived. ATI Damper arrive damaged, sent back out for repair.. Have all new hardware including Piston squirters. Hack racing Oil pump chain tensioner, Vac / cometic MLS

11.5:1 86.5 spec'd for 140MM rods and enough piston relief for option 3 Cat cams with +1 valves

          Finished up Idle valve mount

          Finished up fuel line mounting

          This could work?

Test fitted spare Active Autowerks Swain tech headers

          Motors out

          I don't need that

Knocked off a few more that were tough to get to with the head on there.

          To the machine shop!

          Outbound to WPC

I got some FK Rod ends since they were in stock vs the Aurora, A lot cheaper too for fitment work.. AND...

Maybe video will work... has decent bit of play, NIB Day to day, Day to Day... Anyway, show goes on, Use them for mock up, Toss in recycling when done to be something else disposable..

SO, I was hoping these Castor Blocks of strait replica DTM units from Vink would net me enough space so I didn't have to rebuild my Y pipe and move my fuel filter. WRONG!. But wow they are Sexy.

          Tight

Now that things are super adjustable, Let see what we can do about 11.75 degrees of castor.

          Camber plate max forward

          Egh...

Welp boys and girls... There we go. E36 M3 3.2 96+ knuckles with 7.5 deg of caster on an E30... - 3 Deg camber, 12.5 MM spacer removed, added 5mm for tire clearance from Coil adjuster and set Control arms to have same track width. Wheel centered with top 1/3 of fender

          Goodies back from WPC

          Nothing New Really...
Corner of a few cam trays dinged from packaging... FFFFFFFFFFFFF What are you gunna do? Debur and send.

For our next act we have bent tone ring ATI Damper.

          Damaged Good SEND THEM BACK

Next up: Finish pedal box, Reinforce firewall, Plug hole in HVAC area from B+ removal, Reinforce strut tower tops, Add Boss for 3rd hardware point of Castor Blocks, Machine shop photos, assemble. Upgrade oil pump shaft, Check valve lash, Mono wipe if I have time

JB Mid weight flywheel. I love these things. Waiting 4 months, I am the only order.. So lonely, Canceled... FX Racing on the way. Hope a Non bent ATI damper shows up!

Got two people in the works for a carbon hood. Well see....

          WORK - TBC

Why 7.5 degrees? (What even is stock 96+ E36M3 caster? I see some stuff that said 6-7deg but I know you put a lot more thought into this than just "a bit more than stock E36")

I've seen Terry Fair say 7.5 is the upper limit of what they aim for.

The camber gain of higher caster isn't worth the handling penalty of weight jacking. And when I say higher, I was at 11.75 (96+ knuckles, SRS 5 lug cabs, E30 CA), with wider rubber, lower offset wheels, Big sway bar, and stiff springs the effect of weight jacking grows. Wheel was centered yes, But wheel location doesn't equal alignment. The goal was to get 7-8, but an adjustable range, I went forward with the strut until it hooked like it wouldn't be able to be reinforced properly with the E30 camber plates I was using. The E36 stuff has more Caster Trail, this is why it really isn't plug and play if you want it optimized, and I plan to continue optimize this car in all aspects. An example is where my strut ended up with "stock" E36M caster, so comparatively the hub probably sits 1-2 inches rearward on the E36M knuckle vs the E30. And theoretically I can get more camber gain by moving the strut outward and shim the knuckle (Reducing KPI, Keeping camber), but I don't have tire clearance at the coilover. With the roll center kit was able to remove .5* camber per side which will help braking and tire wear. The goal is for least amount of camber offset with camber gain in compression, like a real racecar. Most contact patch at all times.

While sweeping for caster the last check at 7.5*, the car was a lot more manageable on the scales and wanted to shift less than before at 11.75.

              My caster notes:
              Side Notes TC01 95M 96+M E30 - 20* E30 Mtech - 20* E30M - 20* E30 M3 Evo - 20*
              Caster 11.75 6.97 7.5 8.5 8.75 9.05 9.25

726 cage looks amazing. work of art!

Lots of awesome upgrades. throttle pedal is beautiful!! brake booster reinforcement is SMART. its paper thin hymn there. Shock tower - man i was contemplating redrilling to e36 bolt pattern for more caster with slr plates configured to e36 bolt pattern. I think my caster up front is R/7.52 L/7.76 according to my last alignment - and that was the target so i've been content for now.

                  May 2022

The end of E30 month, the beginning of The Vintage month.

As its taken some time to catch the thread up, these months are taxing on time and require lots of focus back at the shop to catch up.

Its another year with sad door card that looks like it had a stroke from Nine Stitch, I've been quiet, well see how this goes... Ill probably reach out to AMX in Poland, Ill keep this picture here for motivation to do so...

But the Interior is back together, and this part has been drafted for a week due to how terrible Photobucket app is. If any photo fails upload.. its as you have to delete the app and start all over..
Here we are, seat belts, Harness, Roll bar, interior paint, is all coming together now. Loaded up ready for the DYNO

Break in and Initial tune on the M50 manifold, All went well, was getting sporadic vanos faults... Ahh

THIS IS A RUN FILE FROM THE ORIGINAL BOTTOM END WITH WRONG CAM TIMING TO NOT HIT VALVES - SAE Smoothing 5

THIS IS THE LATEST RUN FILE WITH CAM TIMING SET SQUARE ON THE NEW MOTOR WITH M50 INTAKE SAE Smoothing 5
                  + 11.5:1 Compression & 140MM rods

A breath of fresh to get out of the shop - I guess I got what I deserve, NIN. On the trip I got to pick up the hood.

And then back to shop where I excitingly and disappointingly fitted the hood, It'll needed work. fitment wise, In the end I got it pretty good after shaving down and filling with resin..

At least I got some resin to use as filler with the hood to finish it out.

But at least I had some resin laying around the shop

                  Break in oil, 1st change.

Finish swapping out some carbon bits.

Dialed in the alignment with all the new front bits, Running 5mm front spacers only to clear the coil adjusters with the new WIDE Falken Rt660 tires, but was able to get the track with from adjustment of the front control arms. Caster 8.5* 2705 Curb weight 1/2 Tank. Gained 40lbs from the roll bar, Harness's... Hood was only 25lb lighter (11LBS). Tires maybe a little bit heavier, fresh rubber and wider vs worn out dunlops. The reinforcement from sub frame probably added a few pounds.. Gained a few LBS in the rear of the car with the Roll bar also which helped F to R balance..

                  Had to make some room

Now were about 5% left with some roller needed on the upper the inner fender in the rear..

Looks like had a bit of a lash issue with the Vanos plates, I ran them on some sand paper on a flat edge and got a few thousands of the stack shaved down.Assume it was binding causing the Vanos CEL, felt better re assembled.

Another thing I'm curious if this vanos spline is deeper only letting me get 8.8MM measuring the intake reflector wheel via TIS repair.

One thing I'm not in love with is the turning radius of the DTM arms, I get about 20* steering angle, just enough to get a caster sweep. Along with the relocated tire rod pick up point this is how much rack stop I needed!

Feeling great everything is back together and finally able to get some test drives in... Vintage departure is around the corner... The new bearings are bit tight, but I can tell things are getting smoother with less resistance.

Checking out the control arm angles. We'll get some bump steer and roll center measurements later,. Maybe have to do actual bump steer tie rods later to them parallel with the control arm.

Strut top mod turn out well, we will see it it works on track.

Carbon hood is fitted about 85% and still needs a coat of clear, Did some LTW on the hood support and went together with Titanium hardware

Had to build a mount for the hood support.

Welp, there she is, Hood 11 LBS

Washed and Ready to roll, Added a windshield banner mainly to get out of the sun and swapped over the roundel. Its driving and feeling pretty good!

                  Work and Vintage to follow.

                    WERK

Offset bushings arn't all the same... And there is nothing really for STD E36 geometry control arms on 96+ M3 knuckles.. They all add to much caster. .

                    So SLR it is

                    Getting alignment lock back down

The car was hooked... maybe too hood. More work cut out for us... Slight roll. :(

Took about a year but finished out a TV stand.. But I love it!

                    Mission accomplished

After discovering that this was the best example I came across and the price was reasonable I decided to make the move. The seller also described it to me politely "Shit or get off the pot"

Off to Madison Wisconsin to Kelly Moss to pick up the Cayman

It was pretty cool to be in the facility supporting the cars that you watch during the IMSA races and walked by their trailers and garages which crewing and spectating. Here is a quick tour. PS 992 cup cars are body in SILVER. I though that was pretty cool.

After spending months holding and looking for the right example there was no way this was going to see salt, Luckily the salt lick washed away before the commute back home to KY. The blue was way better in person than ever expected. The interior was a great match for the color!

Shoes match, we match. Beep Beep Beep, were off.

                      Lunching and lookin

And now you start noticing the others.

Snow and storms were moving in so we had to veer west and ended up in Champaign, IL. I thought I had to scout for a good parking spot before with the E30... Entropy doesn't sleep. Not to mention I learned a new crazy thing about these cars. When we arrived at the hotel I smelled a wet rubber smell, It was raining.. But the rubber smell! Smelled like inside of tire ran flat. When I got out of the car I checked all the tires, checked if cords were showing. I did noticed the steering was a little skippy in parallel paring environment. I spent all the night thinking about it and researching how to replace the belt! And what I've came up with days later, it appears, the high caster angle can cause skipping feeling at low speeds, especially if you have some brake on. Seems quite common, and people live with it... I guess so...

The next day I noticed a lil zig in the bumper... I don't remember seeing that before. Entropy doesn't sleep.. I doubt it was there, I doubt it didn't happen in the hotel lot. My insides sank for a while.. Did I miss this, on everything I checked out before, Already! A non respray car, and now this! FF

Getting past half way, heads up, enjoy the car, enjoy the trip... INDY!

Go directly to the shop, do not pass go. Washed and relaxed for a min

Home for a victory toast with the GF.

PS.. Even before owning the car, I acquired these. A wheel I always enjoyed looking at.

The E30 will still get loved.

Actually this is its first was since those track days last year. Getting off some grit before it goes into storage. It'll come back stronger.

                        Rabbit hole express...

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO!

I had sent a set of mufflers out to Cantrell motorsports where the did the Carnewal GT mod. I got them back and polished them up. Toilet bowl cleaner & AutoSol metal polish was and amazing one two combo.

I had watched THIS video 100 times before I hand, more aggressive than the sport exhaust, perfect for OE+

Factory fit! Just what I was needing.

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO! Its A Y pipe I found made by Rstrada, Took a while to get here but it was a bolt on piece. They say its worth 5hp vs the factory T.

This is the most important part of the build so far. Breathe.

Sound check, Test cruise. yeah... Spoiler is still in car wash mode..

is that a... Learning as I go, you run out of camber adj because the toe eccentric max's out. To pull more camber on a lowered car toe arms are a must. Did some digging but ended up on SPC toe arms. They keep a rubber bushings on the inner joint, OE+!
They do make lockouts for the eccentric, higiher priority for a track car.

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO! Just GT3/2 TRW control arms with tarret rubber inners. I did go solid caster pucks... OE- (Minus) , Were still up.

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO, its just upgraded cable ends from function first. MUCH BETTER! The biggest thing I did NOT like in this car was the shifter.

Finish up the Goodridge brake hoses. The pedal is OK, I hear the GT3 master cylinder is a good upgrade, I just don't wanna end up going down any rabbit holes.. Checkin out that crosshair action on the pipes!

Dat Alignment. Camber: -1.65F -1.9R Toe: .04F .37R Caster: 8.15. And here is why I am where I am 1/2 tank without driver 3087... The vehicle had perfect 50/50 cross weight with or without me. Amazing. Couldn't belive it. BMW's keep that american diet...

The Winning Formula - This shop is great! Professional all around.

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO! These mods you think will do something. I DEsnorkel'd the intake, Just a lil more noise to sing with the exhaust.

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO! Its just paint corrections and PPF that I had to redo later due to poor craftsmanship...

I could look at her all day..

                        Coffee.

Heading down to the DYNO. PT 2 Racking em up!

Hey is that a rabbit hole? NO!.... SSSSssssh Throttle responce and heal toe down shifting is much better!

Next up but forgot to take a photo, 997 short shift kit with function first ball bearing shifter. This was on of the best things I've done to the car as the factory shifter was pretty bad...
