It's true that most of the Iranian population is pro-western and living in fear at the hands of the dictators that hide behind the veil of religion and theocracy. I would guess as much that as 80% of the population is against the current regime. The other 20% are living under a rock or they are being paid off by the regime in some manner.

The current Iranian regime is like a bad girlfriend that you know you need to get rid of. You wait and wait hoping that she goes away but in the back of your mind you know that you'll have to pull the plug and get rid of her no matter how ugly it gets.

This would seem like an impossible task given the brutality of the regime towards its own sons and daughters. However, you have to believe that they can do it...They overthrew the seemingly untouchable regime in 1979 and it can happen again. The difference being that the Shah did not authorize his police and military to open fire on innocent civilians who want their voices heard.

Could Iran be a strong ally for the west in the middle east? They sure were before. At the time of the revolution, Iran had the 4th largest armed forces in the world and shared a ton of interests with the west and the boys over in Europe. We need to remember the strength of the relationship that the Iranians had with the US. I recall seeing pictures of parades for the Shah in New York City on one of his visits. When was the last time that we saw that happen for a foreign dignitary?

We are only seeing the brutality that is being covered to a limited extent by western journalists. Imagine what is happening behind the scenes to the poor bastards that want freedom.

Who do you turn to when you are being beaten, shot at, stabbed, robbed, and tortured at the hands of the government?
You just brought religion into it and imposed things that didnt make sense to the convo proving some sort of bias to me.
I stopped reading after the bolded :???:

I am wondering what kind of support they would need to properly overthrow the Iranian government. Are we talking a million troops and another trillion dollars here?

Spreading democracy would be better spent then spending it on universal healthcare.

          This

Homie: In 79 they didnt need any help from the US to over throw the govt.

Hell just a statement that we back them in principal and spirit will go a long ways to Aiding their cause.

The problem is that the Ayatollah will use live real bullets on its own people to quell this little problem. That will take the fight out of many of them and the ones that still fight on will be tortured and executed

Oh great we have another goofy fuck around here

The opposition movement has stated they do not want the US to help.

And you're right he doesn't want to piss of the Ayatollah. If Obama comes out in full support of the opposition, Khamenhi will blame the US for meddling and give the protesters themselves as proof. He has to show support and simaltaneously be restrained in what he says.

Direct from the CBS transcript of Harry Smith's interview with our president, Obama's answer to "Do you have a message for those people in the street [in Iran]?":

"We stand with those who would look to peaceful resolution of conflict, and we believe that the voices of people have to be heard, that that's a universal value that the American people stand for and this administration stands for."

Wanted to bump this because I noticed something on my google home page today:

Stories with red numbers - Michael Jackson died

Story with blue number - Iran is fucked up

Which will have more bearing on the world in the long run, and what does this say about America?

Here's the link to the Iran story should anyone want to read it: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/27/wo...er=rss&emc=rss

Edit: I probably could have just taken a screen shot of the OT section.

So you stopped reading after the first sentence yet you were able to determine a bias!?!? Do you do any financial planning? I'd love to have you deal with my finances...the way I see it, a person with such a deep sense of worldly affairs would have no problem turning my $ into millions...

nothings going to happen. trust me. not as long as the ayatollah is there.
Sad to say that this time a revolution is probably not going to happen. Even though its been 30 years to...the day? that the radical islamic government shit has been there.
They killed a bunch of my family.
Not on my dad's side though...my grandparents (who now live in TN) are really old now, and pray daily.
