I tell you what though, most of the guys in my unit who were prior service, mind you these are guys who have been in 20+ years, said that if they had it to do over again when they were 19 they would have gone AF.
Edit: funny thing is poor bastard op is probably sleeping in his bunk right now in civies and wont see this thread for 6 more weeks. LOLLast edited by aaron325ix; 08-03-2009, 11:17 PM.sigpic

i picked wisely as well... national guard units are in-country for 9 months- AND i got the fatty $20k enlistment bonus :D
but yes. anyone with time in service in any branch will know that my friendly ribbing is exactly that, friendly- ultimately we are all there for the same reason; and the guys from my unit who lucked out and got transported in via AF rather than other means told us they got treated like kings en route.
if i had it to do over, i would probably choose door gunner in the AF rather than combat engineer in the army as well. when i was being flown from place to place in iraq i always looked at the guy manning the M2 in the back of the chinook with a litle bit of envy. and i might still, when i ETS.
and all of that aside, being that PJ is part of the SF community... nothing but respect for anyone who can hack that.past:

I get a bonus as well and now i get back pay due to the stop-loss crap. I need to apply for it.
Anybody that was eligible to separate and was restricted from doing so due to stop loss is getting money for each month the were held in service.
My bonus was 12K and I signed paperwork in Balad so it's tax free. While not much it was due to having 12-18 years.
I like the my job in the USAF I get to travel to numerous places and generally stay in nice facilities and yes even gripe at times when the hotel is crap....yup chair force. But I wanted this lifestyle so to me staying in the sand pit was old. I had already done two tours in Kuwait/Saudi in 90/92 and then did a 3rd in 94 in Saudi. I was sick of being stuck there. So changed Jobs.
PJ is a tough school guys that graduate are deserving of their Beret.
