Many people hunt with hand guns ( I have) and its not a matter of "need" its a right to own a weapon period and if you dont like it, tough you dont have to use it. But your fear of any weapon in the hand of law abiding people is your own problem, not mine and you dont have the right to deny me any of my fundamental rights so get used to it.

I don't have a problem with guns being used the way they should be... I have a problem with criminals using them to kill people.-Erik

Protection. How do I defend myself if a martial artist or a group of guys wants something I have, or just wants to physically injure me because I looked at him the wrong way, said something he/they didn't like, etc.?
Seriously? Read the Second Amendment. I thank god people like you aren't the majority here in this country. You have absolutely no grasp on what you're saying, and I doubt you've read through this thread.
If you *really* want an answer why don't you read some of the 2 million cases of people successfully protecting themselves last year? I highly doubt you'll do this though, as if you did you wouldn't have an argument.Comment

Here's a bit of reality for you:
#1, if a criminal wants a gun he will get a gun, and there is nothing you can do about that. Not in the US, not in England, not in Australia, not anywhere.
#2, if there were *zero* guns in the world, criminals would find some other tool to use to tip the odds in their favor, such as knives, bats, pipe, etc. The *only* option you have if you want to lead a normal life is to arm yourself with a tool capable of inflicting greater force, or resolve to die if another human being chooses that to be your fate.
I personally take responsibility for my own safety, I will not be a victim.Comment

Agree 120%
I carry one every day to protect my self as well if need be, thats also a way a gun is supposed to be.

This, I completely agree with.i was introduced to guns at a very young age. i also learned at that same age that guns are not a toy and that the kill. until i was 10 i could not touch a gun without my father with me ( at 10 i was given my first rifle a 10/22).
it was instilled in me to respect guns and the power they posess. i think that if you instilled that same level of respect alone with responsible gun ownership there would be a lot less accidential child VS child shootings. in the proper settings i think you should introduce small children to guns, but they should not be readily accessable to them at that age either. they do not posess the mental abilities to make judgments correctly (duh) and the parents should be responsable with their guns. unfortunately personable responsability is something that is very lacking in todays society.-Erik

This situation was handled very well. You're a responsible gun owner and I applaud your actions. I was raised on a very quiet island in Florida where nothing like this ever happened... I know I am ignorant to situations like this but I do know that they happen. I also completely agree with what you said about how young kids should be taught about the power a gun has and how to use them responsibly.now let me share just one gun story with you. i will set it up for you first. i live in a pretty nice and quiet part of scottsdale (alex/e30s52 can attest to that as he has been to my house). super low crime, nice neighbors, i have forgotten to lock my car and left the windows down ad everything is still there, you get the picture.
well, on the first night i am here after the remodel and i have bought the house, my roommate and i are unloading the last of his stuff from the back of his truck when we here a girl saying loudly "stop.....help me" . we stop and look to see what is going on and see a young couple in the grass accross the street chasing each other. it does not look serious, more like a BF/GF playing pinch and tickle, so we keep unloading the truck.
next load out of the truck she is getting louder, sees us in the driveway and starts to head accross the street to my drive way saying again "help me please!" i can see by the look on her face that something is up. she asks me to help her and explains that her BF is roughing her up and they are fighting. now i am thinking "super, why am i getting drawn into this????"
now the BF is in my carport too and my well trained 130lb rotti is outside and brisseling at this kid so i grab his collar and restrain him. the BF tells her that " we don't need to bother them with our problems" then grabs her by the arm and starta to pull her away. she resists and starts to cry. she then tells me that she is 18 and he is 1 then the BF tells me that she is preggers and wants to have an abortion, but he does not want that and wants to "talk care of my 1st baby!" she then interjects with" but i am too young and so are you, i am just not ready to be a mom" (amazing right?). the dog is getting more agitated at things so i tell my roommate to watch them, i am putting the dog up and getting my phone to call 911.
i go inside grab my phone and my XX XXX 40 cal and slip it into the waist in the back of my shorts and put my shirt over it. i then call 911 and tell them that there is a domestic call involvikg a minor that has walkwd into my driveway and would they please send someone out to deal with it ASAP! i also tell them that i havew a CCW and a XX XXX 40 cal on me in my waist on my back and to advise the officers as such.......ok done!
i return to the carport to a VERY agitated BF argueing with the GF and pulling on her arm and a confused roommate. i tell the roommate that the cops are on the way and then step infront of him and lift the back of my shirt to show him the gun.
at this point i tell the BF to calm down and leave her alone, but do not leave, the police have been called and are on the way. he then turns to her and says " bitch look what you have caused!" and raises his fist to strike her. (now i know that i am going to have issues if i actually do anything to him because he is a minor and at the time i was 34, this is why i grabbed the gun in the first place).
i then pull the gun from my waist; so he can see it without actually pointing it at him; and tell him "don't fucking do that! sit the fuck down on the ground and shut the fuck up!"
one minuite later the cops show up. as the 1st cop is walking up the driveway, i tell him that i called 911 and i have a gun, then place it on the hood of my car for the officers piece of mind. now 2 other cars roll up and there is 6 cops at my house. they seperate the BF/GF and start to take statements. i reholster my gun and begin to give my statement.
as it turns out the girl lived in west phx by her young mexican BF. he knocked her up and the parents sent her to live with her aunt in nice quiet scottsdale. the stupid aunt let the BF move in with them against the girl's parents wishes. when the police brought up harboring a minor and statutory rape charges against the GF. she decided to send him packing witha trash bag of crap to the bus stop.
nothing ever happened to me other than the girl thanking me and the aunt appologising to me for what had happened.
i carry a gun, i used that gun properly for the situation, noone was hurt alls well that ends well.
things can happen at the most unsupecting times, in the most unsuspecting places. being prepaired is the key to handling things correctly, both physically and mentally-Erik
