This was on a tiny island back in the sixties and so it wasn't like this happened in an urban area. It's debatable, but t is my understanding that it was unlikely that Mary Jo Kopechne could have been saved after he drove into the water. No one knows for sure how long she survived in the car. IMO, he had been drinking most of the night and this happened just before 1 am. He obviously made a ton of bad decisions.

In the middle of the night, Ted swam back to the mainland and tried to make it look like he had been on the mainland all night (hoping he could find someone else to take the blame). In the morning, after the getting advice from his family, he gave a statement to the police (but did not give the details). He denied being drunk and trying to nail the secretary.

I'll say that it's a pretty fucked up thing to have done. I don't think that "Chappaquiddick" makes Ted Kennedy a good person, but the way right wingers cling to this story you would think that he burned babies for profit. Feel free to argue about the details, I'm just saying that mrsleeve's account is not accurate.

it doesn't matter, even if your account of the story is correct he was still responsible for her death. And all the other things he did were just as despicable, especially for being a "respected" politician.

Glad to see him go. Now the assholes in MA are trying to quick change the law so they can get a liberal appointed to the vacated Senate seat. They want to change the law back to the way it was when Romney was Governor, and John (why the long face?) Kerry had an outside chance of being POTUS. They changed the law to prevent a Republican Governor from appointing a Republican Senator, and now they want to change it back again to suit their own ill cause. Fuck these liberal fucksticks here in the gay state. I want to go back to Montana, Wyoming, SD, and Utah.

Me too am in PA working and kinda have a place in IA, I hate it there and want to go back to MT full time (no work though)
