The incident happened a year before I was born in what was likely just as salacious and scummy as has been imagined. Sadly, it has become a colloquialism for covering up the truth of the matter. A girl died in very suspicious circumstances and a wealthy playboy never served jail time even for the least charge he openly pleaded guilty to.
He was 37, a year younger than I am today. She was about to turn 29.

That's not really what happened (but no one alive knows all of the details). Forty years ago, Ted Kennedy attended a party where he and buddies could nail secretaries on the Island of Chappaquiddick while their wives and kids stayed at home. I'll say that it's a pretty fucked up thing to have done. I don't think that "Chappaquiddick" makes Ted Kennedy a good person, but the way right wingers cling to this story you would think that he burned babies for profit. Feel free to argue about the details, I'm just saying that mrsleeve's account is not accurate.
