If you want to be a mechanic and have a life, diesel tech is where its at. Get into Cat or Deere program for 2 years and get an AA degree. Go work for a dealership that pays great and gives awesome benefits. The economy does not affect this industry as greatly as it does automotive. My brother works 60 hours a week as a Cat Tech, I used to Intern as Management for his company and certain weeks 60 hours was done in 4 days and you had 3 days off.

The mining, oil, drilling, and garage disposal/waste disposal industries no matter what the economy is are always going to need machinery moving and this movement requires repairs and maintenance.

UTI guys walking into our dealership with there dumb gay clothing and leaving within 30 minutes because the preception UTI has in Arizona is that they are useless part swapping monkey's.

My cousin went and graduated top of his class , exceptional grades and all. He's making okay money, he wished he would have taken a different route though. For the amount you pay to go there you can pay your way through a community college then transfer to 4-year school. Much better options through a 4-year school as well.

Did it, worked in two indy bmw shops, now I'm back in school and currently working IT at a medical device company.

I don't want to work on car's my whole life to try and support myself/family to come or deal with the stress of opening/running a shop. YMMV

As well, many of the engineer's at my company now have just as much, if not more, knowledge and know how for working on cars/trucks/bikes than the students I attended UTI with.

If I could do it again, I would have not slacked so much in high school and gone for a 4 year, now I'm looking at year's of night school just to get an AS.

Look into getting sponsored through a Caterpillar or John Deere dealership, its kinda like a paid internship. My brother did it through a local Caterpillar dealership and was paid while working in the shop.

I went for diesel/industrial only. I didn't want to sit in class with the "it was this or juvi" assholes. Maybe it was where I went(PA not far from Philly) but there were a lot of shit heads there that didn't care to be there at all. I am not making great money. I detail cars for myself right now and that is it. I had a 3.8 through the whole ordeal, got some refrigeration certs, SOC in Transport Refer, decent attendance. I worked for an independant guy fixing FedEx trucks while I was there, I still cannot find a decent job in my area. I'm waiting for the college kids to leave so I can hopefully get in the Navy base with my brother. I have always had a nack for working on/fixing things, not just cars. I have experience in all sorts of things other than what I went to school for. The hardest part, around here anyway, is that most places want you to just give them a resume and fill out an application. A lot of times this being online, no one gets to see who you are or what you really may be capable of while you're applying for the job. Anymore it seems like it really is about who you know. Unless you can get in somewhere and make a name for yourself, good luck coming out of there and making huge money like they put in your head. I know a few people will get lucky, the stars will align, whatever. If I could do it again I may not have gone that route, but I definitely grew a little as a person. Having to work 7-8 hours, then go to school for 6 everyday gives you a new appreciation for down time. Plus living on your own if you never have is a huge learning experience.

i understand im going to have to work my way up, but im not going to accept minumum wage, or something near it. I'm going to school for at uti no matter what anyone else here thinks, and my only expectation for it is to have a garenteed job pretty much when i get out. i hope they don't let me down, :/

Hope for the best and prepeare for the worst. From the sound of it you're not doing that. No one is trying to shit on your dream or anything, it's just that sometimes things do go according to plan.

My advice is this, save the 40 grand and get an internship or job at the bottom of where you wanna work at. Learn from the pros, watch what they do, and get good at it. Take classes at the community college, it's the same shit when you get out since no one cares that you went to UTI.

The real world is all about who you know, and your experience. Going to UTI, you'll know no one in the actual business of things, and won't have real live job experience.

You really have to work your ass off to get that job after you graduate, my advice is start looking when your half way through. Their "employment services" office will help out a lot but really not until your last few classes. They are not going to do all the work for you. So email and call as many places during your school time. Best of luck to you if you decide UTI.

so i graduated from UTI back in march this year with automotive core classes and ford fact. can you change oil and do brakes on a car? if yes then most of the core classes are a joke the only decent courses are electrical diagnosis and automatic trans. the rest are a joke. the ford fact classes on the other hand are much better, they actually have you diagnosing real problems on real full cars not the clip car bullshit. I got two different jobs while at UTI, NTB being a mechanic actually can make pretty good money doing that, not the bullshit tire tech job. then a job at a toyota dealer. i was accepted to BMW MSAT training but turned it down due to wanting to finish my engineering degree.

so all in all i think UTI can be worth it if you put the effort forth and are able to deal with assholes and kids who do not want to be there. and as far as job placement better have a decent resume and to get into MSAT's better have a clean driving record.

Like I said earlier, but with a new revision, save the money you'd spend on tuition, get a job in a shop, then feel free to spend 35K on a rollaway.
