lol hs was rather easy for me, i just didnt care for it. never studied once, and made good grades. the only classes that kicked my ass where the math. And my hate for math and the like drove me to find a decent career in what i love, thus, you see my desicion making on choosing uti, it just fits for me. Maybe alot of the success storys are hyped up, idrc, im sure i can find a job being a tech, or something, maybe even a parts runner, idc. 7.25$/hr washing dishes sucks. i have had 2 years of experience to say so. if i give it 100% on my career, i should get back what i put in, i HOPE. thanks for all the replies you guys.sigpic

i just noticed this thread, so ill give my 2cents as a uti graduate.
i graduated from uti about 3 years ago, uti of socal (rancho cucamonga). i had a uti rep come to my high school shop class with an h1 hummer and he talked about how he lives the good life and we can be just like him. i loved cars and the thought of going to school for 1 year to become rich seemed too easy. it was. dont expect to graduate and start making 100k+ as a shop foreman at bmw. i figured that out day 1 at uti. the thing with uti, you have to make it work for you. dont expect too much, and apply yourself 200%. 95% of the guys that went to school with me just because the didnt want to read books/do homework/ wanted to fuck around for a year while their parents think they are in school.
while i was going to uti, i worked at a parts store, towards the middle of the school i started working at pepboys as a lube tech/minor installer. after graduation i became a mechanic at pepboys and started buying tools. by this point i can do most maintenance, brakes, r&r and minor diag. i moved back to va and worked at a pepboys here as an all out tech. i did everything from clutch's, engines, headgaskets you name it. i wasnt the best, but i tried hard and had good teachers/supervisors.
now i work at a nissan dealership. they sent me to their training center, and i got all my ase's, certifications, inspector license, master tech cert. iam capable of turning over 150 hours every two weeks, and iam making over 60k a year currently. i can easily see myself making 100k in the next few years.
sorry for the long post, just wanted to share my experience. i could have gone to the community college shop classes and worked my way up through shops, but i do not regret going to uti and i would do it again.
we have 3 guys at my dealership that are uti grads. 2 are very good techs turning nice hours. one just graduated and came straight to here. he sucks. cant fix anything, everything that leaves comes back. i guess you just have to pace yourself, and learn as much as you can. uti will teach you how every sensor and mechanical part works, but they cant teach you how to fix cars.

btw, i graduated 4.0 gpa and 100% attendance...but nobody in the real world will care or know that. i could have entered any manuf. program, but i got a reckless driving in va for speeding excess of 80, and that basically blocks me out of any of those. if anybody has questions about uti feel free to ask or pm me

I too, like you, abhorred the idea of more school after high school. The auto industry is a tough place to be right now (actually, it always in service). I've worked in it since I was 14 (it was hereditary) including a year or so after high school full time. Couldn't make shit for a living, so I joined the military and spent 4 years in Marine infantry.
Then I realized, oh fuck, I'm getting my ass back to school. I did it, and now I'm in one of the best paying, most secure job fields in the nation. Worked in the auto industry during school though, as that was the only thing I was really qualified for.
There's a lot more to life than cars. There's something to be said about keeping it a hobby, so you enjoy it. I know you think you'd enjoy working on cars for a living...but there's a difference between working on '97 Corollas with 240k that just came off the interstate in the middle of July, and restoring 3.0 CSL's and e30 M3's. Sure, you've got to do the former to get to the latter (most of the time), but chances are you'll end up doing a lot more of the former, and less of the latter.1991 318iS

I went to MMI which is an offshoot of UTI, but its for motorcycles. I love motorcycles and I especially love building them. However, since the economy took a dump custom motorcycles don't pull what they used to causing shops to close and working at a dealership SUCKSSSSSSSSS ASSSSSSSSSSSS!! Guess thats why I'm back in college
