I love a good watch, it's the engineering that speaks to me.

I have an old Elgin solid gold pocket watch that I bought from a street guy years ago for 5$ ( I haven't even had it out of the safe for years ) Looks just like this,

For the most part I don't even wear a watch, my cell phone does that job now, I do have a cheap auto Invicta for when a watch should be worn ( formal events ) and I just picked up a pair of new dive computer/watches for the wife and I for our dive trips, I gotta tell you that hurt, three grand on two electronic watches. These, Oceanic OC1s

I can understand those of you that think an expensive watch is a waste of money, they are made for a job ( to keep time ) and a quartz will do that just fine ( better than most if not all autos )

I'd just like to add that every time I've seen a Movado on somebody's wrist they have turned out to be a douche bag. I'm just sayin.

        Stuhrling "Raven Diablo"

just under 200 on amazon, skeleton mechanical automatic (pendulum type), with hand wind.

Gets alot of attention...specially when you see all the gears and springs bouncing back and forth.

Alot of douchery on this thread, so im not sure if these have been mentioned.

Check Ebay for good clean Tissot's. I have an immaculate prc200 seastar that i bought used for 200 and change. Its a 300m automatic with a screw down crown, and screw down backplate. Really an awsome watch for the money, even if you were to pay 800 retail.. (compared to other overpriced garbage)

Ill be honest, out of all the watches ive had and broke, my old 15$ 1984 Timex my pops handed down has been through the worst of it all by both of us and has lasted the longest.. You get what you pay for doesent necessarily peratin to watches. Ive had a Sub, a Tag, a shitload all pawned for what i paid, never worth it unless your looking to impress. I have to mention my 60$ Croton automatic that i beat the ever living crap out of daily and it wont die. (automatics are usually the fragile ones) Its always the cheapest watch that lasts that you appreciate the most.

And dont be scared of Citizens. I have a titanium ecodrive 200m screw-down that i fish with, supposedly the battery last 7 years. (Im an animal, beleive me its durable) I have a Promster race with lap timers, and a ton of nick nacks that I havent got to play with yet. Both are good watches for the money.

Stay away from: Swiss army, bulova, guess, ESQ, movado, any clothing line knock-off, basically anything that you see at a retail store is junk even if it a couple thousand, with the exception of citizen and some seiko.

Yeah what was it?? A tourbillon movement or something????? almost had to be. Me when it come to the $$$$ watches am a Big Omega guy love the Speedy Pro's and Planet Oceans

              Shift:
For under 200 NEW thats going to be about the best bet. I just bought a seiko SKX007 on a bracelet off of ebay and awaiting its arrival next week some time. Its the same 7s26 movement as the Monster you have up there. Your other options are the Sumos or the sport 5's, with similar movements both from seiko. Dont let any one kid you just because its a seiko does not mean its not as good as the Swiss. Seiko is one of only a few watch manufacturers, that design and make all their own movements in house. Patek is one of the others. Seiko's up market Premier lines are great, and have a few autos that range into the 6k range MSRP. While what you are talking is great for a Daily watch and good value for money, and will get the watch bug started, ans it gets expensive.

Your going to be hard pressed to find a better and tougher sub 200 dollar Auto, than a 7s26. Citizen is back to making auto divers again but like the Seiko not officially available in the US. The citizen pro master diver is basically a clone of the Seiko 007/009 right down to the available Pepsi bezel. Again ebay is the best sources for these watches.

A hamilton Field Khaki is a good option but will be 250 and up (new and heavily discounted) and on leather or NATO style strap.

You might be able to find a ok used Marathon SAR on ebay or good watch forum for about 350 and up (much much better watch) but new with a bracelet you are looking at 750ish New and 500 Good used. SAR will be my next one after I finally break down and get my Speedy pro broad arrow.

              Edit the Seiko SKX 007
This is good advice, and thats a nice looking quality watch there. But if your looking at dive watches make sure your crown screws down- especially in saltwater.

I head over there, find one very similar to this, it had been on display in another store so it was 50% off, plus my 65%. End of the day I spent $70 or so, probably one of the best purchases I've made. Great watch, comfortable, never had any issues with it. The ex took it home with her on accident a few months back, haven't seen it since. I really want to get a tag, but obviously they're quite pricey, and I get %70 off oakley watches, so the minute machine is tempting, although quite large.

You can do much better with your 330 (70% off amazon prices) bucks that thing, good god its Hideous (My opinion) and screams look at me I am more of a Douche than the guy wearing a Movado (again my opinion)

For 300-350 you are in that limbo zone between what we have been talking about here for the most part, and the cheaper "good" automatics. Right there at the 300ish range your mostly going to find Really good quartz with a ton of features.

For that money I would be looking at the Citizen Night Hawk or sky hawk, or a Seiko premier Chronograph.

Or you could throw another couple of hundred at it and step up into a Auto Hamilton Air Race (and if your patient you might find a good used x-wind in that area) or a Oris F1 or TT1 used but in really good shape.

Edit: there are several gentility used Oris F1's going for killer prices on Ebay right now

I don't think a watch is worth buying unless it will be around and ticking in 20, 30, or 50 years when I want to pass it down to my kids/grandkids.

I think seiko is the cheapest auto watch that will last lifetimes.

I have a seiko diver that was given to my father for his 15th birthday in 1965 and I still wear it every once in a while.
I agree w/ Maniac! I'm really not a fan of Invicta and the quality seems sub-par at best... I think Seiko definitely puts out a great quality product! I've had mine for over 5yrs and it's never let me down! And the sapphire crystal face has NEVER gotten scratched!! And I wear it everyday, and it's been banged too many times!!

Here is my Seiko Arctura Kinetic, the original price was around $600 but I bet you could find it on ebay now a days for close to your budget:

This one isn't my shot but shows the overall watch really well:
