    As I know and as I see the tittle (no spaces in the equation) it's 288, not 2. But this is really funny thread in the end...I enjoy it

        Distributive property.

        a(b + c) = ab + ac

        Code:
        48÷2(9+3)=x

        48/(18+6)=x

        48/(24)=x

        2=x
        Code:
        48÷x(9+3)=288

        48/(x(9+3))=288

        48/ (12x)=288

        48=3456x

        1/72 = x

        48÷(1/72)(9+3)=288
        48/(1/8+1/24)=288
        48/(1/6)=288
        288=288
        Code:
        48÷x(9+3)=2

        48/(x(9+3))=2

        48/ (12x)=2

        48=24x

        2=x

        48÷2(9+3)=2
        48/(18+6)=2
        48/24=2
        2=2

          48 ÷ 2 * (9 + 3) = ???

          That's how I see it, therefore...

          48 ÷ 2 * (9 + 3) = ???

          48 ÷ 2 * (12) = ???

          24 * 12 = 288

          If they wanted the 2 attached, wouldn't they have written it like this?

          48 ÷ (2(9 + 3))

            No, it's implied.

              I like how there is so much over thinking in the thread, all the college kids are trying put some of that fancy math learning to use. And missing the tree due to the forest.

              5th grade math here people forget the high powered supper alph-geometric-calula-trig-abrea, get back to your basics its simple algebra

              answer is 288

                      48÷2(9+3) = ? is a math problem that leads to two different answers depending on the order of operations used. Since 2011, message board users have debated

                          How, exactly, is it implied?

                          Isn't 2(9 + 3) the same as 2 * (9 + 3), the same way 2(4) is the same as 2 * 4?

                          Whatever, I'll just stick to what my calculator tells me...

                                Most people get the (9+3) part right, as brackets () are an obvious indicator "do this first".

                                The remainder of the equation becomes purely multiplying / dividing, and then the problem lies here within:

                                Take example:

                                A x B / C x D

                                For any purely multiply / divide operation, or purely add / subtract equation, you can switch the order of operation if you switch the order with the operator that preceeds the number ie:

                                A x B / C x D

                                to:

                                A x B x D / C

                                Those people who keep getting "2" for an answer were just swapping and executing numbers and operators at will, essentially doing something absurd like this:

                                A x D x B / C

                                As you can see, it's simply wrong and mathematically offensive.
