Montana does have a speed limit. It is 75 mph. For a few years during the day in good weather, I believe it was unlimited, but the feds have put a hault on that.

Yeah, The Federal Govt told them that they would not receive any federal highway funds if they didnt enforce the national speed limit of 75mph.

The 2 freeway is the exception to the rule, about 90 is the min. That freeway is so wide and no one is on it.

I kinda like the 10, right before san bernandino. Most of the traffic is doin 80-90 easilly, and thats with very heavy traffic. Scary shit.

One thing if learned on my road trip out here, people that live in Nevada, Arizona, and especially New Mexico and California do NOT understand the simple little rule that slower traffic should stay to the right. I have found myself on the 10 and other freeways in the right hand lanes doing 10-15 mph faster than the cars in the left lanes. It seems as if right when the people get onto the highway, they assume that they must get into the fast lane over on the left. I like to stick in the middle or the middle left lane and i can make the trip easier.

I feel speeding is dumb. There are places set up to go fast, if you get pulled over, you got caught. If you want to go fast, atleast make sure that the only person you will kill is yourself, and not some other innocent vehicle.

not exactly true. for years, montana had no speed limit on its highways other than the "reasonable and prudent" designation, but the energy crisis of the 70s led congress to impose the 55 mph limit, and enforced it by withholding federal highway dollars from states which refused to comply. in response, montana created the famous $5 speeding ticket to thumb its nose at the feds. the limits were eventually raised, and federal speed limit controls finally ended in 1995. at that time every state but montana imposed speed limits of their own. for 4 years montana returned to its old "reasonable and prudent" daytime limit, which essentially gave highway patrol officers discretion to cite drivers based on road conditions, traffic, condition of the vehicle, etc. in 1999, montana finally adopted a formal speed limit (75 mph).

what's worse, our state legislature recently passed a law banning open containers of alcohol in moving vehicles. so the days of legally barrelling down a stretch of 2-lane with a rainier tall-boy in hand and a loaded .44 on the passenger seat are now just a wistful memory.

ken, check your facts. the national speed limit was repealed 10 years ago. the NHTSA just "convinced" them to change the law to 75mph.

btw, when they had no speed limits traffic fatalities hit their lowest ever, but when they changed it to a 75mph limit fatalities doubled.

Tennesse was 65 when they first changed from 55. Sometime after that they went to 70 and just last week they went back to 65. Kinda sucks I always drove around 80 on the interstate anyway.

That's nuts, they let the driver have an open alcohol container. In Missouri it's legal for passengers to have an open container. The first time I heard that, I about shit myself. It's so wierd to be at a bar at last call, so you just take your bottle with you to the car.

i live right by ine intersate, about a mile away. Its 60 both directions for about 15 minutes, and then it hits 70. But Baton Rouge drivers are ruthless, we make our own rules. Everyone cruises about 75-85 regaurless of conditons;(even having both sides of the interstate blocked with concrete barriers through construction). And i must say, its nice having a cop lead about 50 cars crusing 85.
