I will say that I am on the "Go the F to work. Have a work ethic. You can hang with your friends another time." side.... however....
Having that kind of work ethic myself, I have missed some very important things I really wish I was there for. Kids first steps, first words, never took the time for a honeymoon with my now ex-wife....etc, etc, etc.
I do regret choosing work over "life"..... You work to have money to live life, but if you miss out on life because of the work, what have you gained?
Its all a matter of priorities. If this is a once in a lifetime thing, skip work. If its just a fun time, I would choose work...... The only one who can make that decision is you.Comment

Work to live, don't live to work.
I usually get sent home if I'm sick, unless it's some crazy contagious shit, then I call in. I hate missing work 'cause I know everyone else will have to work harder to cover for me as well. Also, my shit gets messed up and I have to re-organize my department when I get back.
That said, I called in all the time when I worked at a grocery store. If I was mad at someone, call in. Hungover, call in. Tired, call in. Never got in trouble or anything......but I was the best they had. I dropped back from 40 hours a week to four, and nailed all three weeks of my vacation in a row, then quit....but I had another job I'd held for 6 months by then. I just had to stick around to get my next up in vacation time, from two to three weeks.1974.5 Jensen Healey : 2003 330i/5Comment

Sounds like you'd be causing a pretty big problem by calling in sick since they don't have anybody to replace you. Right thing to do would be man up and ask for a day or two off to see your friends. If rejected, go to work knowing you did the right thing and probably earned some respect for having the balls to ask and the decency to go in to work anyway.Comment

This thread is disgusting. Farbin said it best. Our grandparents would be sickened by this mentality.
Your "friends that are like family" are in town, and you find out the day of (they don't even tell you)? Sounds like you should definitely give up your job for them.
Your career starts with your first job. It will never get you anywhere if you don't take it anywhere. But, that mentality is what every kid has these days, so I'm not surprised to hear it.
LOL, spoken like someone who has never had a real job, still lives at home with their parents, and one day will get a serious wake up call. YOU are what is wrong with this country. You'll probably be the one to join a union one day and strike for your ability to call in for days at a time with no reason given, then the work will be outsourced, and we'll all be out of jobs. That is, if you ever move on from McDonald's.Comment
