Business wise, its would be better to employ a person who is really in-need of work and capable of doing so (read: a Legal English-speaking immigrant).

That is the reality in most restaurant business in this country.

$15 an hour hourly or flat rate?

did he have any experience prior?

could he actually work 40 or more hours a week?

by the time you take out taxes, $15 and hour is not much.

if he was just a shop bitch and never had the ability to make more money or move up to make more, i would jet too.

          how old was he?

using stripper is way easier than sanding paint off.

I was going to say, how is grinding easier than applying paint stripper? Apply the stripper and let it sit while you go and do other things...come back and hose it off.

Dude sounds like a moron. You, as well as your business are obviously better off without him.

I've been doing CAD/CAM work for a dental company for the past two years, and I don't make anything close to that. I feel like people don't appreciate a steady job anymore.

I agree that is a huge benefit when you can get that. I have that at my job and I love the flexibility

I think that we are missing the point with $15/hour, regardless if or whom on here would/ would not do the work for the pay.
the point is, you are the owner, and not only was he doing it wrong knowingly, when you called him on it, he through down attitude (insubordinate prick) I would have probably not fired him on the spot as I like to make sure i cover all bases legally while dropping the hammer on someone (I do it about once a year or so). but In the end, I would have terminated his ass as well.

$15 an hour-I don't put a limit in hours so he could work as many as he wanted.
                        No prior experience.
Shop bitch yes, in a way. Low man in a 5 person shop. I had him run errands but I compensated him very well for it ($1 per mile plus hourly). He could have made more in the future as he gained experience.
                        He was 22
And stripper is the only way we remove paint on aluminum panels. Just too easy to damage them sanding.

I'd do that shit in a heartbeat, especially with the hours, and all the other shit. I don't make dick doing what I do.

i pull weeds and send 600 pieces of mail out and do all the bitch work for my boss and can't call in sick or my work can not function.
                            i get paid 9.50,
i'd take that job over mine for the same wage in a heartbeat, and at 15 an hour id be psyched!
in order to work in a shop you gotta start somewhere.

I'd have KILLED to lay my hands on vintage Euro sheet metal for that kind of (relative) wage when I was 22. The kid blew an awesome opportunity imo.
