Try finding them with rack and pinion steering or EFI.

First one I bought was this 93 2.3 8 valve auto with 105k miles for $1500. I had to replace the headgasket on it due to a slow oil leak. Its now running Megasquirt 1 and I'm hoping the slushbox dies soon so I can swap in the 5 speed I have sitting in the garage.

Second one is a 92 2.6 manual with 155k when I bought it. Found it for $850 some rear end damage. Bent it back into shape and replaced the tail lights and trunk lid. Its been converted to MS2, added 4 pot brakes from a late 300e and most of the suspension is new. This car can cover 800 miles in a day no sweat. Currently working on a manual rack and pinion conversion for it. I already depowered the steering box. I'm thinking about a 16 valve M111 swap in the near future. We'll see.

So is the 190e the new E30? No, not by a mile. It was built with a very different set of qualities in mind like comfortable seats, quiet cabin and smooth suspension. It would take a lot of work to bring a 190e to E30 standards of driving fun. I consider it a challenge.
