It's not that bad, no more work than when people do a swap from an eta to an i motor. You can have t back together by spring!

Scorch marks on the top of the hood suggest that heat was concentrated on top of the engine. I'd have to lean towards fuel fire. I just don't see enough flammable crap near the headlights for a fire that started there to spread that way.

Ya, I would also have to go with fuel fire. I saw a car with similar damage at the wreckers and actually talke to a guy who had lost two e30's to engine fires. According to him, old degraded fuel lines rupture or the FPR fails. It is especially bad on cars where the fuel feed line goes into the front of the fuel rail. You get a substantial leak at the front of the fuel rail and it will run right down onto the alternator. That tends to ignite it pretty quick.

Every one of us should have an extinguisher ready at all times. These cars have been through a lot and 99% of us have done unprofessional mods that can go wrong any minute. 25 year old wires are a bitch.
Late summer I accidentally pinched the O2 sensor positive against the body, started the car, smelled smoke, thought it was a bit of wd40 burning off the exhaust until my dad told me smoke was coming from the harness box. The O2 groound wire (iirc) melted within 30 seconds, and if I had gone on a test drive, I'm damn sure the rest of the harness would've caught on fire and that thing is just too damn close to the fuel line.
Stay safe guys.

Just fix it. It's a nice looking iX coupe, and there's no reason to let it waste. Or sell it to someone whole and let them fix it. As much as people need parts, I think the general e30 community would rather have this car exist as the red ix coupe it is, rather than a pile of parts. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

lol, thanks for all the kind words. as for fixing it, i'd consider that an option if i had a garage. but it's winter and i dont, so i just kind of have to let it go.
i dont need 2 ixs anyway. good to know so many of you are considering fire extinguishers. i tried to pop the hood immediately, but it wouldnt unpop. there was too much smoke and fire near the emergency hood unlock for me to be able to see it. believe me i tried. lol.AWD > RWD
