I definitely don't want Reds, looking for more enterprise grade.

If your actually taking up that space then yeah WD has some great drives, in my opinion seagate took a shit lately and makes crappy drives now.

If you want the best of both worlds Raid some 1TB SSDs and get a bunch of HDDs to also run in seperate Raid and bam. Super speeds and mass storage.

So then you want WD Re/Se/Ae. They usually run about $130 a pop.

Already have 4 SSDs in my system, so yes, have that covered. 2 WD enterprise 2.5" 14mm? HDDs are covering OS/apps backup.

I did contemplate a mass of 2TB SSDs, but budget is going to my S54 swap, HDDs are still cheap enough for mass storage.

Yeah like I said before Seagate has kinda kicked the bucket in my opinion. They are a good price but be ready to send a few back that come DOA lol.

I've bought tons of drives over the years and its interesting because they all have similar reviews.

I'll say this much, even brand new storage systems that cost 100, 200, 300+K I've had DOA drives, bad drives after 24 hours, etc.

Google put out an article many years ago stating that a typical spindle based mechanical hard drive will usually fail in the first 1 - 3 months, and frankly in the real world its true.

I've bought thousands of used hard drives over the years, all enterprise grade, FC, SAS, NL-SAS, SATA-MDL, even basic SATA.. I've probably had 20 die? Out of 1000+.. Not bad right?

Out of brand new drives? I've had disk systems with 200+ hard drives, brand new show up, and have had 20 drives fail.. not even spin up.. these are drives that retail at over 1k a PIECE.

Those reviews are typical.. it happens.. its why we have Raid, its why we have backups, and if you want piece of mind its why we have warranties.

Most hard drives these days.. are all made in the same areas of Asia, have similar IOP, similar speeds, etc.

Would I take a WD over a Seagate? would i take a Seagate over a Samsung? WD over a HGST? Nope, because they all fail with similar numbers.

Interesting, WD just seemed to get better reviews lately.

I don't pay attention to reviews w/o stats really. Storage review.com used to be my go-to, however less and less HDDs get reviewed.

I kinda want to build a raid 10 with 10 drives, with two for hot-swap. Finding good cases for this that also look stealth are hard to come by, as then I'd have 16 drives in it. If I do that, then my backup must also be upgraded again....

You could run all the drives in a separate case near the desktop that way you can have a good looking desktop, and raid. Like a separate drive case.

Took a month to get in, but damn pictures don't do it justice. Hands down my favorite case to date.
