This is another reason why the quote above yours is absurd. I have some in-laws in Idaho who grew up in the South, and they say it's quite a favorable comparison with the exception of the colder winters there and hotter summers here.

I do get your analogy though. There are some cities in CA where people live in a bubble. They think that they are the shit and untouchable. Living fake lives to be a part of the glamour, lavish lifestyle and most of them don't have more than a few hundred dollars in the bank. I see students drinking $5 Starbucks beverages every day and not think twice about it. I was like them once, living my life in the moment; with zero accountability.

And there are cities in CA that are completely down to earth. Folks are humble, old fashioned and mature. I have lived in both settings and the best way to describe it is that: People are a product of their environment.

I spent a week last summer in Huntington Beach for work. Coming from boring ass Columbus, Ohio I was blown away by the picture perfect weather in mid August. I've never not wanted to go home so badly.

I think we need to break down CA a bit because as we know CA is a large state vs many East coast states. As stated, Norcal is very different from SoCal. It might as well be it's own state. They are generally more scenic, the weather is cooler/gloomier vs SoCal. More treehuggers up there than SoCal, Silicon Valley, Dinan, nice universities, etc.

                    Socal:
As far as fake people go, keep in mind most people here in the LA area are transplants from another state or country and when they come here it's usually to make it big in entertainment or whatever the LA market caters to and a lot of that depends on attitude and appearances to break into a scene. Many foreign students come here to study and a lot of them come from money too. This is most common in the heart of the city like downtown, Hollywood, West side...anywhere there are studio's or clubs. In LA it's not uncommon to run into celebrities and some people make it a point to hang out where they hang out. It's not what you know...it's who you know. I know people who made it as make up artists, extras, video vixens, putting their kids in commercials, modeling, etc. So there's many people just looking for a big break.

There are also a lot of homeless/runaways who come out west to Venice and other "artsy" areas. If you think about it, LA is perfect if you were running away and had to live on the streets (the weather is nice almost year round) and you can link up with other people who are in the same situation.

This is a good point. When I spoke of living in southern California, I lived in Pasadena and Brea for the most part. In general, particularly in OC the vibe was very materialistic and the people horribly selfish. However I would say that native Californians in by and large are more genuine and caring than transplants but also a little bit crazy in some way or another, particularly those who migrated from Norcal.

We have culture in Cali, but mainly beautiful mixed women :) 8=====D~~
Downtown LA is cool (skid row, Staples Center, lotta crime)
Hollywood is where it's happening (see celebrities on their daily routine, too many hipsters, but its all about history. Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills, Mullholand Dr.)
Huntington Beach is where you go to check out girls. If plan a trip to HB. Go during the Surfing US open. So many girls in bikinis!!! It's overwhelming.

I agree northern California is beautiful.problem still remains the cost of living and in fact San Francisco it even cost more.I have friend owns house in dupoint WA .They just bought last year a really nice house in San Francisco. They have the house on the market and cant wait to go back to WA.They said their house got broken in 2 times. He does not like all the people.I love San fransisco,Monterey, but still big money to live their..I driven across country 8 times. The three states I lived are California, cape cod /Massachusetts, and washington state. In mid west their are even places to live were you can really get allot more for money. This my thing I don't want allot snow been their done that .I don't want to hot weather I hate heat.I love the rain so my choice were Oregon or washington.I picked Washington I lived their before and Seattle is a very cool city.Funny so far this year now I'm leaving is as of yet the weather been very good cooler.Place I bought is a little out the way Big trees a good distance between homes.I will be 29 miles from Bellevue.
I know California very well it has plus and minus like every place. For me the pluses have gotten very small on my list.I will miss seeing every car you can about imagine at one time or another will be on their road for you to see in Cali.I will miss the great Mexican food and Filipino food.to each is own.
