Depending where you live you can probably find a clean, stock and ~100k mi. civic in the $3000 range. They can go thousands of miles with little maintenance.
Or just get an '02 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed single cab.

Most *BRAND NEW* cars compare closely to each other as far as price goes.
