I use both. It's kind of weird. I say "I-5", not "the I-5", but say "the 405" not "405". Really, I only don't use "the" with I-5.

I say neither "the" or "I". I just say "5".

      Take 5 north.

            Quit making up highways.

            I say highways without "the."

Around here, most prople just refer to them by the number "75" "275", etc. Some use the "I" in front of it, but never "the 75" or "the I-75".

In Florida, I know a lot of British people there and they refer to all numbered roads with "the" in front of them - such as "the 192"

If I remember correctly there is one in hawaii, H-1 or something. Not really an interstate, but a federal highway.

Ahh this shows em all: http://www.hawaiihighways.com/Interstate-ends.html

here everyone just says the number

                        like "go to 45"

                        or "stay on 610"

I always say the I-5 (and so does everyone I know), and I'm a fair bit more north than most of you :P

Dave, I'd guess it's because the highways in the UK start with letters. You take the M1 versus you take M1.

I guess its funny to have 4 roads to go to another state, when they dont lead to another state :P

                                It's I-5. No "the" involved.
