Okay, I finally started playing with my settings again and realized, my computer is running abnormally warm at idle. My CPU is steady around 50 c at idle, no OC. When I am not lazy, I will clean out all the dust that probably has been building up in there and I might need to reapply thermal paste. I should probably look into some better cooling options over the stock heatsink and fan.

For the longest time I wondered why my computer idled at 70C and took 94C to play miniclip flash pool

Then I took it apart to inspect. face-palming followed.

Idles at 48C now, 70C max while playing Max Payne 3... I'm happy with that

I had that problem with a 5770 a while ago. It was hitting 90*C under load all the time.

Took it apart and found the heat sink completely covered.

Funny thing though, when I replaced my motherboard this weekend I decided to take apart my GTX 660 and clean it up/apply new thermal paste. That heat sink was almost completely clear after about 18 months of use.

that reminds me - our HTPC is nasty inside. probably fists full of dust/hairballs. Need to blow that thing out with an air compressor this weekend.

If you have a desktop PC/tower....and a leaf blower (electric, not gas) - it's the by far the best tool for the job.

A plastic stick vac(not metal) with a bristle brush adapter really did the trick for me

Yeah, I was going to do it in an enclosed space, preferably a small bathroom, and direct the blast straight at my open mouth. :p

thats the beeest way to do it!

bu aanyways watch the air compressor though since the condensed water molecues have a possibility of shorting the board, not a huge deal since ive used one for the same thing i just did it in spurts and not holding it down.

I had a water cooling setup pop a hose (back in the days before you could buy computers with them, we had to build them ourselves), which hosed down the entire motherboard with water.

it was fine. I'm not worried about a little condensation from the air compressor. :p
