chevy S10! a real (mini) truck, with the 4.3 it will outrun a 325i. It is a full frame durable truck, hell, I built a lowrider with 4 pumps, and 14 batteries in the bed, and beat it for 2 and a half years.
chevy is the way to go. The S10 has a real front suspension not torsion arm crap, and parts are cheap. Toyota motors might be o.k., but the rest of it will fall apart-interior.

Hmm I was going to purchase the car brand new, but I really want bench seats up-front, so that makes me go back to the Ranger.

Anyways here are the criterias Im looking for

        - 4 Cylinder (gas economy is important)
        - 2wd (no need for 4wd, will NOT be doing off-roading)
        - 180+cm of bed length
        - New or used - up to around $22,000 CAD
        - Bench seat up-front

I will make sure to go test drive the new Ranger (probably not a Mazda as they seem to be more pricey), and Tacoma.
I will also try to look for some used Tacomas.

Any other suggestions? I know absolutely NOTHING about trucks...

EDIT: Can you guys also suggest some model years to look for?

Of the trucks named the Tacoma is by far better per consumer reports.

I have had more than five Toyotas going back to an 83 Celica up to a 2000 Tundra (I just bought a 96 Land Cruiser, it was better than a 2000 Explorer I looked at) and I strongly recommend Toyota.

I have had no problems from my Frontier. KA24de is a great motor. I get about 26 mpg in it. I was looking at Frontiers and Tacomas. Tacomas were more expensive with more miles.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will also take into consideration of the S10 and Frontiers.

I may also consider some SUVs like the older 4runners and such.
I just need to go look a bunch of different cars, and take some measurements etc.
Maybe even like a E34 Touring if it's big enough...

                    rangers are piles of shit.

S-10's are decent, but it has the typical GM Truck interior, stolen from the fisher price barbie jeep.

Get a Toyota Tacoma, or Nissan.

For a day to day truck, the Japanese build a much better vehicle

If you want an SUV, Toyota 4runner hands down, awesome suv

Even when comparing a brand new Ranger vs. say '00 Tacoma, would you guys recommend the Tacoma?

Brand new (and even the used) Tacomas are very pricey. I don't like the '06 Tacomas anyway, because they don't offer a Bench seat, and seems like it is much bigger than the other light-trucks. So I am starting to look into the '94 - '05 ish Tacomas.

I scrapped the Nissan and Chevy, just because I hate the way it looks. Mazda, because it is the Ford.

So if Im buying a truck, it would either be a used Tacoma or brand new Ranger.

I'm also gonna look into 4Runners, and E34 Wagons. (yeah I know, it's strange comparing a truck to an E34 touring, but I wanna stay with the bimmers )

I'd take an 00 tacoma before an 06 ranger any day of the week.

I'd go down to maybe a 97 tacoma before I even gave the new ranger a brief glimpse.

I've driven a few different frontiers, and even though you said power isn't too much importance, they were slow as dog shit. The tacoma really is that much of a better truck compared to rangers, that's why they are so pricey. You get what you pay for.

4runner is a good choice too

E34 tourings are hard to find, pricey, and are going to cost a lot more to maintain than a new pickup.

Find a Tacoma. Drive a Ranger and you will see how shitty they are.

All this talk of compact pickups has grown this thread a Vag.

Rangers are total shit, S10's are slightly less shitty, Toyotas slightly less shitty than that. All still suck.

I don't get "compact" trucks, you get all the crappy fuel mileage and lack of handling of a full size, with no ability to actually to actually haul or tow anything.

Except fuel milage is worlds better on a compact (Aunts 01 tacoma gets 25 highway - lets see any new full size get that realistically), and will still carry most average sized loads in the bed. Your right on the towing part though.

Id get an 89 Toyota over a brand new Ranger, thats how much better the Toyotas are. Im not even kidding.
