    The Lion and the dentist

    http://www.yelp.com/biz/river-bluff-dental-bloomington

Tl;dr version of this whole story is, dentist flies to zimbabwe to kill a lion and the internet heard of his actions and proceeded to destroy.

A supposed ignorance of the law of the land and repeated previous offenses don't exactly paint him in the best light...

The lion was a protected lion, and while you can pay to kill a lion legally, this was not one of those lions. Basically this dude is a poacher.

Yelp comments are typical burn him at the stake type but some are truly funny.

At least the lion head, when mounted to his wall, will have excellent teeth.

A tag lets you hunt some lions, but not all of them. This was was protected, so yes it's illegal.

I wouldn't call him a poacher; he wasn't doing it for profit. He wanted to hunt a lion and he did, but his guides essentially told him to kill the wrong one, not realizing who he was.

i typically view bowhunters as more honorable than guys who use firearms since using a bow sorta levels the playing field... but on anything big enough where you have to pull a gun on it afterwards... doesn't seem very humane

Baiting the lion to leave the refuge so it could be killed by dragging meat behind a truck. Yeah, that's some real manly stuff right there. This guy gives no fucks about what he did and is only trying to cover his own ass because he got caught. I hope he is deported to Zimbabwe to stand trial for poaching, along with the assclown guides he paid all that money to.

Fuck him, and fuck bullshit sport hunting. I say this as someone that fully supports game hunting, at least so long as it concerns shooting non-endangered animals and actually eating them when you are done. Hunting is fun, but you owe it to the animal to end its life as quickly as possible, and to make use of it as best you can. Pop a deer, butcher it and mount the head on your wall, that's fine since you ate it. Pricks like this that are only after a trophy are pathetic. I feel badly for the lion, particularly because Dr. Smallcock wounded it with a bolt and then spent 40 hours chasing it until he was far enough from the preserve to shoot it with a gun without raising suspicions.

This lion was familiar with humans and probably walked right up to this guy thinking it was another day in the park. Instead it got wounded with a poorly aimed crossbow bolt and chased down for nearly 2 days. At the very least I hope that this guy suffers financial ruin and lives the remainder of his life in shame, hopefully making other people that share his hobby think twice. It would be better if he was convicted on criminal charges, although there's obviously a big jurisdiction issue here and his chances of being extradited are basically zero.

Someone should bait him with the promise of easy patients with great insurance then shoot him in the leg and track him down for a day to shoot him in the other leg just to track him for another day and a third shot to his hand, then other hand, then torso, then assuming he is still alive (which he will be cause scumbags never die) a final shot to the head before mounting his head in the game reserve where Cecil lived as a deterrent to assholes of his ilk.

Or just watch as his life self destructs due to the masses anger and review driven healthcare ratings. Either way, he's in for a shit show as he truly deserves.

A protected individual or just generally lived in but not confined to a protected habitat ????

Oh the outrage........ Shows just how many of your have NEVER hunted for anything but your car keys or maybe poon..... Let alone a big game animal outside of your home state let alone your home country. This is one of the reasons I HATE Disney movies for kids with talking animals.... So much outrage over a fucking lion, but so little over PEOPLE getting whacked in every city in the world every day.

This guy PAID the Country a HUGE fee for the opertunity to hunt a Mature Male lion in a specific area on a specific set of dates which is what he did. Next he paid a local outfitter and guide another HUGE fee to set up all his paper work and give him the greatest chance at success of filling that tag, along with making sure his hunt was in compliance with all local regulations. THIS IS THEIR JOB......

I know ignorance of the law is not an excuse for it, but with out taking a SHIT pile of time to research Zimbabwean loin hunting regs ( I am sure they are complex and technical hence why you hire a fucking GUIDE SERVICE) I am going to make some points about how this situation works here in the good ol USA.

1 you have a state/national park / reserve / protected area where hunting is outlawed.... Thats fine you cant take an animal with in those boarders, critter crosses the road, river, or what ever "boundary" delineates protected area from not, that animal is fair game if you have the tags for it.
(see this similar situation OUTSIDE Yellowstone a couple years back http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/09/sc...tone.html?_r=0 )

Now mistakes can happen in the field even when the hunters are professionals experts and know their quarry better than most anyone else afield, sometimes key details can be missed depending on how the animal presents it self the terrain and lots of other factors (you know it might be hard to see a fucking radio collar UNDER A LIONS FAMOUSLY BIG SHAGGY MANE) See this incident from last year (a Biologist and LARGE CARNIVORE SPECIALIST aka bear EXPERT for the state Fish and Game in WY mistakes a Grizzly for a black bear) ...

Now from what I know of big game African hunts sometimes when you get a tag that is for a specific preselected animal that needs to be culled from the population for what ever reason, your tags will tell you what animal(s) that may be based on ear tags or other individual identifiers. From what I gather this is NOT the case, in this incident, from what I understand this is where a man bought a tag and paid the outfitter and guide for the hunt, in an area near a national game refuge, the man took a lion that wandered off the refuges protected area and was shot (poorly from the sounds of it, though I have taken a previously wounded deer that had an arrow nick its heart a day or 2 prior but not kill it, though from the outside it looked like a good hit Cats even house cats just dont die very easy and are very durable, just scale that up a bit). This is where the outfitter comes in, He is the one that knows (or is supposed to ) all the ins and outs of the local regs, and what you can and cant do. Be it baiting, night hunting, protected individual animals in the region (collared/tagged spray painted etc...) and make sure your not killing one of those.

Hence why the outfitter and guide are facing charges, they are the ones responsible for the guest hunter and telling him which animals are legal or not and if the one the guest chooses to take is legal or not. Saying oh fuck this guy and ruining his life, and trying to take his lively hood from him, for participating in a what was supposed to be a legal hunt (you know the guide services primary job and why you PAY them HUGE FEES) and had a unintended but possibly (again with out getting into the deep specifics) fair animal is fucking stupid and very short sited..... Given the very serious nature of how aftican nations take their big game trophy hunting regs and the penalties for fucking up, I would not think a guide service with a large land holding and professional guide would be willing to put them selves at risk for a dentist form MN.... (given hes got chump change compared to some big game hunting clientele to make doing something like this "worth" it)

Now all this said the guy should have had at least a basic understanding of the regs for his hunt and if anything seemed amiss he should have taken steps to mitigate that stay in what he should have known was correct..... If this turns out to be the case then by all means hang him by the balls, but if what they were doing was with in the rule book, to fucking bad, or they didnt see the collar or something hey shit happens pay your fines and move on, though they should have reported the collar thing right off the bat, for sure and complied with that portion of the law as soon as they figured it out. I am not a big fan of pure trophy hunting like this, while I will pick the best animal I can for that purpose its not my main goal, mine is more for the nutritional aspect, but if have a few to choose from...................

That specific lion. He had a tracking collar and was being studied by Oxford University. And he was a part of a game preserve/national park. I'm aware that you can pay to hunt and kill a lion in Africa legally, but that ain't the case here. Also, I'm hearing that the lion was lured out of the park, not just 'wandered off'. Big difference.
