Interesting article a co-worker sent me recently.
We both laughed how it relates to our own kids and school!!

Getting good grades for "effort" and not doing the work completely/correctly!!

We have a few 20 something apprentices at work (carpenters/ironworkers).
They all started a bit "lazy" but seem to be coming around after a year or so of work.

I came across this article today and made me think of this thread.

I've made a point of avoiding anything in the realm of politics and religion, but my anger has been rising and I need to vent it somewhere.

As others have said, each generation thinks the next is shit. In part, I think this stems from the fact that our standard of living has been continuously rising for roughly the past century meaning the subsequent generation "has it so easy". We stand on the shoulders (and necks) of those before us.

This distribution of wealth conversation is total bullshit, for the most part. In the United States, we live better than Kings and Queens lived just a century ago, even the 'lower' class. Waffle the 1%? We are the 1% of the world! Shove your socialist propaganda up your waffle!

The previous generations built this amazing infrastructure of physical and technological advancements that we take advantage of today. At least in United States, the supporting mechanisms needed (for the most part) to build our current 'state of things' are no longer needed. The result is that the profile of jobs available has changed which I think also contributes to this idea that the subsequent generation has it easier.

With that said, I do think things are somewhat easier for our generation because of the availability information and sharing of ideas in a volume that increases on a daily basis. This also leads to more hate put on millennials, because the stupidity of people in our generation can now be instantly shared with the entire world.

The sharing of ideas does not mean the ideas have any validity. Also, knowing of something, doesn't mean you understand it and as things get ever more advanced and complicated the less people understand. Every word now said is deconstructed by a menagerie of social justice warriors and applies the views of outliers onto a larger population or even entire society. Then governments and associations go chasing after ghost to appease the sheep of society. Meanwhile we never search for or address the root cause of problems in our societies, we just attach things that keep the sheep happy so the political puppets can stay in power.

Ugh. Had to take micro/macro-aggression classes at work. I can't believe this is a fucking thing.

I think schools and social media are having a bigger hand in raising the ones born 2000+.

Also, I've noticed the stay at home mommy is making a come back. My Wife raises our child, and will continue to do so. They will be home schooled with the option to go to public high school if they choose. Socialization isn't an issue either, as there's plenty of groups around these days that organize things for the kids and parents to meet.

If I had the means, I'd pull my son from school in a second. As a teacher, I see a lot of drivel that gets passed off as education, and it pisses me (and many of my colleagues) off.

Actually though, I am seeing a lot more "Stay at home" or "Work from home" dad's then ever before. I did that for a while, because my wife is in a better position career wise then I at that time. In fact, if it weren't for my contract expiring and having to work for a different company that wanted all dev on site - I'd still be home!

Hell, if my wife was able to give herself a raise next year to cover close to my salary - I'd go full time stay at home dad in a moments notice!

I've read through the common core curriculum and, while I think I understand theory behind it and agree with some of it, in liberal arts I worry that the source material is not enough to present variety of POVs, yet students are asked to provide their own POV or interpretation based on the material and their life experiences... What life experiences?

There have been studies on the generations that suggest the millennials share most of the characteristics of the WWII generation which has been called the greatest generation.
Characteristics like believing in tradional values, right vs wrong, pro USA, believe in the constitution, pro-religion, community oriented, and the first generation since the WWII generation where drug usage has declined.
i'm a boomer. i'm super optimistic about your generation finally getting things back in order. you're starting to get older, have families, realize whatever you get in life is completely up to you and no one else. The next step is political clout that gets rid of, finally, the entitlement class of politicians that have completely screwed things up for everyone,

Thank you boomer. I'm 19. All my friends are super-conservative pro-constitution, pro-stay at home mom, anti-PC. We're still trying to shake off the political vestiges off our predecessors, but I share your optimism.

Edit: also if you had a link to that study I'd love to read it

No. People in their 20s seem more concerned about looking for their next hook up than finding somebody to marry and start a family with. I think it can be blamed on the fact that fewer girls feel like they will need to depend on a man someday, so more relationships essentially boil down to finding a sex partner until the girl gets bored and moves on to another guy. Families are viewed more as dysfunctional nightmares than loving, supportive social units. And who the hell goes to church any more?

Ahh yes. Because being in your 20's, right out of college, probably with a decent amount of student debt and a job market that kinda blows, seems like a GREAT time to start a family.

I'm not interested in either marriage or random hookups. Too much trash to sift through, imo. My career, financial standing and well being are more important than getting a ball and chain or getting my dick wet.

I'll throw out that I have yet to meet a person who was home schooled who wasn't pretty weird. In fact, I would go as far as to say that those examples have had the traits we often associate with millennials to an even greater extent. Haven't really done anything they could realistically fail at, years and years of a parent building an unrealistically or un-warranted optimistic/positive self opinion and ego, and so on. By no means are any of these folks assholes, but those are the traits that make them "off" socially. Before you all go pulling your kids out of school, I would submit that there are some other less tangible benefits to being in a social learning setting, even if the actual material being taught is lessening in quality these days.
