I'm kind of obsessed with picking up a cheaper 1911 for target/fun. I've read some great reviews on the Rock Island Armory 1911s, and for $449 for the Nickel in .45ACP, it seems like too good to be true.. Anyone here have experience with RIA?
I have a Springfield base model 1911 (Mil-Spec, formerly the G.I. model). Picked it up for about $700 in Cali after taxes and so on.
The guy in the video says it compares well to the Springfield models. I am sure it would be a reliable fun shooter for $499.

Hate to say it but you can find the milspec or G.I. Model for about the same price. Rock Island is not a bad gun and would give the Springfield a run. But I would prefer the Springfield any day!

Oops, meant to type $499 in my post. I was looking at Springfields as well, but I keep going back to the RIAs because of how cheap they are. I'd prefer a new "lesser" known gun to a used "house name" brand. Plus, it'd come with a lifetime warranty.
My only concern is that it'd turn out to be a complete headache, as some 1911s seem to be. I'm used to shooting my Glock 17 and my brothers Beretta 92FS, which are both completely trouble free.

This is the dumbest way of thinking when buying a firearm. Guns are cheap because of their build quality. In this industry "you get what you pay for"

I am not saying Rock Islands are a bad gun but for the few extra bucks I would no doubt go with the GI version by Springfield. That way you have a Mil Spec platform that all aftermarket parts would fit standard if you ever wanted to upgrade. As you stated 1911s can be finicky. It would be nice to know you started off correctly.

Almost every single review I've seen has said that the RIAs are a bargain at the price, and compete with many of the higher end guns. I wouldn't buy a High Point just because its cheap ;)
The thing keeping me from Springfields and the others is the coin, I dont wanna drop $600+ on a toy. As I said, I have the Glock for work, I just want something to tinker with and shoot on the weekends for a change of pace. $600/700+ for a toy at this point in my life seems kind of excessive.

I dont know where you guys are shopping but you can get a GI for around $500-550. I remember when they were $400 all day.
I see them at the local gun shows. They ask for more but money talks. Also check AR15.com or Budsgunshop.com as well as Gunbroker.com. They are out there. When looking I saw a nice used one for just over $400. Came with the case, 3 mags, and not a scratch on it. Its an election year and with all the shooting people are hoarding guns once again. If you look you can find them.
