Then a 5.56 carbine should not be the rifle of choice. .308 or snipping rifles are better suited for that range.

    5.56 has a 14" drop @ 300 yards.

Im not saying you cant get kills at those ranges with a 5.56, in fact, you can make ones life miserable up to 500 yards with that round, but for anything over 100 or 125 yards, there are better choices.

    Regards.

Shooting all the same ammo over the 45 year span??? Just curious ;)

Guns are like cars, even some of the best performing ones aren't necessarily"reliable."

that would be like saying a 50bmg is better than 308 for that distance as well. Try loading out with 308 and go for a 20k ruck march. You had wish you had the 5.56.

Second to correct for bullet drop, I zero mine in for the 50/200m zero. Meaning at 50m and 200m my rifle will be dead on.

If I am needing to reach out further I could always switch to my Remington 700LTR or my FAL, two rifles more reliable than an AR in 308

again all weapons are mission specific

Thats not what Im saying at all.

Thats the whole point of an M4. A light field carbine w/ light ammo. Normally there is only one solider carrying a .308 in a squad.

Thats a good zero, and some guys do that. I prefer zero @ 100 yards, which puts me about 1/2" low @ 50...hardly enough to even be concerned with.

Im not arguing that...my point was, mobility aside, if you find yourself engaging more often @ 125+ yards, there are better choices than a 5.56.

          Regards.

+1 But its what the military has adopted. I like the new rounds that have been developed based on the 5.56 and i wished we would change rounds but it just would cost too much money i guess. I like the 300 AAC or the 6.5/6.8 When i had my all expenses paid vacation to the desert we would occasionaly do urban ops, but most of our action was seen at ranges where the 5.56 had that 14" drop. :puppy: Then...we would just use that .50 cal

My 1911 is dead reliable with the rite ammo and Mags. Only time I ever had an issue is when I tried to use a crappy 10rd promag. With Rem factory loads and kimber pro shop mags I never have any FTF issues on my kimber tactical. Didn't cost me $2k either, more like $900.

This is why I bought a Glock. But a lot of people love their 1911 and it has served our country rather well.

I just can't deal with plastic guns. Just like I will never build an ar15 off a polymer lower receiver... It's all preference, just like cars. I love my old BMW's and other classic well built cars, newes cars are too fake and plastic'y feeling.

Yeah, and there's just something sexy about a 1911. Fun to shoot and they look trick!

A glock is next on my list, but not because of its looks

                    I mean come on!

What would you guys recommend for a 1911 around $1,000? I have been wanting one for forever and I think going to pick one up around Christmas. I'm not looking for the best of the best as that's well out of my budget. But $1k seems about right to get started into one. They seem to be more of a "what ammo you shoot, makes the gun" kind of thing, from what I've read. Although I've heard Kimbers are the best by all my local friends and then you get online and it's nothing but hate. I hear this with a few good companies so not sure where to look. The Sigs seem to all be around my price

What you guys think? Looking for a 5" too

Most agree that 1911 manufacturers that use MIM are of sub-standard quality, and will provide the most trouble, however, your question is like who makes the best pick-up truck...very subjective to experience and opinion. But with that being said, for about $1k, I like Sigs. Well made, lots of features, and everything is forged on it. Kimber does use some MIM parts, but each gun is hand fitted, and you can get into one for less that $1k.

It really depends on what you want to do with it too. Are your going to match/target (ISPC) shoot? 3 gun? Carry? Safe Queen just to show off? Hunt?

                              Good luck.
