    Miss Montana is AIRBORNE ✈️

"One of the most compelling stories from across our fleet is the dedicated, hard-working crew of Miss Montana! Having faced weather delays and worked so hard to have their beautiful C-47 ready for the mission, they are now airborne from PQI>CYYR. We are so thrilled to see their hard work pay off for them!"

“We are incredibly grateful to the people of Presque Isle, Maine & the quality time spent with the City Council this morning over breakfast was priceless,” expressed Eric Komberec, chairman for the Miss Montana project. “The gifts were such a surprise, thank you!”

“Thank you for all the hospitality of our entire fleet over the last week, Presque Isle!” - D-Day Squadron

On the far NE coast of Newfoundland now, about to cross to Greenland. Weather iffy - not sure they can continue to Iceland today. American planes are spread out from Newfoundland to UK.

In Presque Isle Maine, the mayor and the city council sent a limousine for their use and took the crew to breakfast.

my son took me flying for the first time today.

he has a job doing aerial surveying in Hawai'i.

we took off out of Barber's point on Oahu and headed over to Kauai. about a 45 minute flight at 130kts.

there is some decent eye candy sitting on the ramp at Barber's.

time lapse of landing in Kauai

we Ubered to the tip top motel, cafe, and bakery for lunch. Bento plate and Oxtail soup.

This is the proper way to fly GA in the islands. fuck shoes!!!

here is a time lapse of landing back at Barber's.

what a blast! i am so proud of that kid. he will be at a regional in a few months. i wanted to take the opportunity to get out there and see him before he comes back to the mainland for good.

Yeah, what a cool place to fly around in a little plane!

Our Montana DC-3 has made it over the ice cap of Greenland, across to Iceland, then 1500km to Scotland safe and sound. She is now on the grass at Duxford alongside many others, getting ready for the D-Day events. Facebook pics have been great.

It's funny how it's just a bit like a Lindbergh crossing or something (partly because of low budget), but they take off across the ice or northern Atlantic, and we hear nothing for 6 or 8 hours... Then boom, a homemade iphone video from some remote ramp out in the wind. It's pretty old fashioned, I like it.

This is the couple taking care of the plane this whole trip - Crystal and Randy. He's the chief mechanic and she does maintenance and logistics.

What kinds of maintenance do these need that they fiddle with it every flight, every day? Are they adjusting valve clearance?

What is the cylinder below the engine? Is it an oil cooler?

-Valve adjustments, plugs, checking hoses, chasing leaks. They're doing unusually long flights on old restored airplanes and it's prudent to shorten maintenance schedules.
-Yep, oil cooler, all of those old radial planes require massive oil coolers to keep the oil temps down since oil is doing a lot of the engine cooling.
-DeHavilland DH88 Comet, a famous racing plane from the '30s.

That’s a badass looking plane. Has a really interesting wing shape. Thanks.
