no waste and the energy created by fusion is 3 to 4 times that of the energy released by fission! Problem is it takes an insane amount of energy in to produce fussion reactions. Minimun ignition temp is like 180 million degrees!!! So with that said, the 2nd problem is confinement.

It only seems logical that the millions of cars driven in the united states for the past 50ish years is going to contribute to increased levels of CO2.

Whether or not it is significant enough to cause global warming doesn't matter so much to me, it is still destructive to our atmosphere, no matter how small. Can we all agree on that?

So, regardless of CO2 being the primary cause of global warming (or other by-products of burning fossil fuels), I think it is important for us to adopt new, more sustainable forms of energy to not only protect the air that we breath but to also support our ever growing population.

I mean, seriously, what have we got to lose? It seems conservatives right away talk about major economic losses or that it isn't even feasible... It's not about that. It's about NEW TECHNOLOGY. Are we all afraid of change?

I'm a conservative and you don't hear me talking about major economic losses. Sure, it costs money to invest in new technology - but everyone's doing it! All the power companies are working on new forms of energy. And most car companies are building hybrids and some, including BMW and GM, and working on hydrogen combustion motors! I think NacyE30 brings up a good pont....

The problem is, there's no universal solution. If there was a solution as easy to implement as gas, coal, etc., it would be done. But, there's supposed drawbacks with each one. Ted Kennedy shot down a major wind farm off the coast of Massachussetts, hydroelectric power was stoppped because of Salmon in the Northwest, Nuclear power has its own detractors, etc. everyone talks about new energy, but no one wants it in their backyard.

Americans won't buy electric cars, fuel cells aren't there yet, CNG requires an entire new infrastructure, many new gasoline replacements have their own drawbacks (E85, for instance). If it was that simple it would be done by now. Corporations would leap at the chance to be the first to field a new energy source.

Totally agree. There's many alternatives out there! But, there's always someone that says, "you'll kill birds" or "you'll block my view to the mountains with that huge fan." Fine, then keep using coal! One huge one is nuclear fission! People just get sooo freaked out when they hear the world nuclear. Unfortuntely it creates nuclear waste, so we need to figure out a way to destroy it/use it.

Do I think the earth is warming? Sure do. I also believe some of these environmentalist whack-jobs are under the impression that the earth's atmosphere is supposed to be a perpetual 82F with light puffy clouds and a gentle 5mph breeze out of the north :loco: A reason why there seems to be a lot of panic over this whole topic is because from the time we started keeping a record of tempuratures in regions all over, the locations where tempuratures have been monitored have seen development spawn around them. Buildings, roads, etc. all collect and release heat - so these need to be taken into account or these weather 'experts' need to relocate their thermometers. I also believe this rise in temps coincides with the suns' activity (which we are starting to take note of now because we have the technology to do that kind of shit). The sun is our source for pretty much all forms of life on this planet and it is essential to our survival. To exclude it from the equation of assessing climate activity is ensuring a flawed theory about what is really happening around us.

The reality is, the earth has gone through warming and cooling periods for many many many years.....certainly longer than we evil humans began industrializing everything. Geologist have discovered and documented the "Medieval Warm Period" and the "Little Ice Age" - dramatic shifts in climate tempurature that occured long before autos, coal burning, Big Oil, Dick Cheney & Halliburton came along. The earth has been around for a lot longer than we have and the natural cataclysmic events it has endured are far greater in strength than anything we could muster up collectively. Give China a break, at least they are starting to work with clean coal technology! Seems like they may still have a few bugs to work out though....
